Position Responsibilities:
Provides educational services and assessments, including curriculum building meeting Flores standards for education requirements
Work a 12-month school calendar in the cottages for all New Horizons Youth
Develops and delivers lesson plans utilizing a broad range of appropriate differentiated techniques and strategies addressing all aspects of communication that develop each student's ability to read, write, speak, and listen in content areas at levels that ensure learners meet or exceed learning targets, and allow English learners to meaningfully access the instructional program.
Functions as a team member; collaborate with other New Horizons Staff in the development of treatment plans for all youth in the program
Plans, organizes, and provides instruction in English in the Core Curriculum Content Standards and English Language Proficiency Standards (IELPS). Instruction must be consistent and coordinated so that students meet and exceed learning targets and the requirements outlined in the state and federal law.
Monitor youths' participation to ensure adequate instruction and assistance to each individual
All other duties as assigned.
Essential Skills and Experience:
Ability to speak, read, and writes English & Spanish fluently, which allows full communication with students, agency staff and third parties.
Possess a valid NYS Driver's License
Ability to use sound judgment while following agency policies, practices and procedures
Ability to handle confidential material in a responsible manner
Ability to work well in a team setting with people from many cultures and backgrounds
Must have positive attitude towards youth
Ability to adjust to change as the program continues to develop an understanding of, and the ability to work with, persons from diverse cultures
Ability to stay organized and multitask
Education, Training, & Experience:
Bachelors degree; certification by the relevant governing authority
NYS Teaching Certificate in ESL or Special Education or; other appropriate accrediting body and additional training to meet the special needs of accompanied children
Knowledge in Academic Testing/ Evaluations
Knowledge of child welfare and immigration related legislation
An understanding of, and ability to work with, persons with diverse needs and from diverse cultures a must
The Unaccompanied Children Program provides long term and transitional residential care and other supportive services to Unaccompanied Children (UC) who are under legal custody of the Federal Government. Working in collaboration with the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement, ORR, our program provides a safe and nurturing environment for youth in a Basic Shelter program, and the Therapeutic Group Home programs located at our licensed residential facility in Yonkers, NY as well as a Transitional Foster Care program and the Long Term Foster Care Program located in foster homes in the Bronx, Queens and Westchester. In all programs, we provide therapeutic and educational services and other supports that youth need to achieve success through an array of strength-based and targeted interventions as well as link them with family members and/or other sponsors in the United States so they are able to move forward with their lives and thrive.
