DESCRIPTION

Community Colleges of Spokane (CCS) District Equity Statement

We seek applications for an adjunct (part-time) teaching position for a double lab section Introduction to Environmental Science 101 taught in a hybrid modality. In this modality, the lecture component of the course is asynchronous online while the laboratory components are scheduled on-ground as in-person sessions. The online asynchronous lecture is unscheduled while the double lab section is scheduled for:
  • Lab 1: Monday, Wednesday 1030-1220am
  • Lab 2: Monday, Wednesday 1230- 220pm

The Community Colleges of Spokane is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the position of Environmental Sciences Instructor in the SFCC Life Sciences Division.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Prepare for and instruct college-level courses in Environmental Science in face-to-face, hybrid or online formats based on need of the department.
  • Communicate expectations and establish clear grading criteria through appropriate instructional means, to include but not limited to developing course syllabi, handouts, and materials supporting the instructional process; evaluates student progress and provides clear, timely feedback.
  • Provide availability and accessibility to students through a combination of e-mail, Canvas communications, scheduled office hours (if appliable) and other effective means of responsive and timely communication.
  • Maintain accurate records for course grades.
  • May participate in department and general faculty meetings whenever germane.
  • Maintain professional standards in interactions with the college community.
  • Comply with state and federal law applicable to professional duties and responsibilities; follow established procedures in areas such as printing, turning in grades, bookstore orders, student safety and health issues, and related administrative processes.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or required.
COMPETENCIES & OTHER REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (Minimum Qualifications):

  • MS in Environmental Science or related field with course work and expertise in biology.
  • Prior teaching experience in higher education.
  • Effective oral and written communication in a classroom and in other professional settings
  • Demonstrated effectiveness working/interacting with colleagues, staff, students, administrators, and others of various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Acceptance of the responsibility to promote the welfare and best interests of students at all times.
  • Acceptance of and willingness to support the role that community colleges serve in higher education, and specifically the mission, values, goals and objectives of the Community Colleges of Spokane.
  • Ability to perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and goals of the institution and the community/technical college system.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student success in classes comprised of students with a wide range of abilities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting a teaching, learning and working environment that honors diversity, equity and inclusion
PREFERRED COMPETENCIES (Desirable Qualifications):

  • An earned doctorate degree from an accredited institution with emphasis in Environmental Science or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Prior teaching experience in Environmental Science
  • Experience teaching in different modalities, including hybrid and online.
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with diverse and underrepresented populations.
  • Experience in participating in faculty groups and collaborating in an academic environment.
CONDITIONS/TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This is an adjunct (part-time) position. Compensation will be pro-rated according to the amount of workload assigned. CCS reserves the right to cancel this recruitment without notice. Academic employees are represented by the Association of Higher Education (AHE), which is affiliated with NEA and WEA. Membership is optional.

Adjunct Faculty: Adjunct faculty must work two (2) consecutive quarters at 50% or more of full time academic load in order to qualify for benefits (based on instructional hours only). Once determined to be eligible, benefits begin on the first day of the month following the beginning of the quarter. Medical, dental, life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under ; TIAA-Cref retirement plan; leave accruals and usage are governed by the faculty master contract.
