computercraft is Hiring a Remote Product Manager

Computercraft is looking for a dynamic Product Manager to join a team that helps develop and manage cutting-edge digital products at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), part of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). These digital products are the preeminent, open-source tools and technologies used worldwide to contribute to scientific research and discovery, facilitate the work of clinicians, and improve human health. Working on NCBI products, these Product Managers can help to accelerate the development of cures for diseases like COVID-19. This role can be fully remote (in the continental U.S.).

As Product Manager, you will work at the center of decision-makers, users, and a cross-functional team of scientists and programmers, driving the creation of prominent technology products. You will identify user personas, define and discover their needs, and work closely with technical teams to develop products and features to meet them. Specifically, the position will support a set of related tools, SciENcv, MyBibliography, and MyNCBI. SciENcv is used by researchers to assemble the professional information needed for participation in federally funded research, MyBibliography is used to save citations and manage peer-reviewed article compliance with the NIH Public Access Policy, and MyNCBI retains user information and database preferences providing customized services for many NCBI databases (e.g., searches, display formats, filtering options).

NCBI has one of the top 400 most visited websites worldwide, and its wide range of applications serve more users and more data than nearly any other U.S. Government agency. NCBI provides free access to petabytes of biomedical and genomic information, and scientists all over the world use its products.

Required Skills/Experience

  • At least 5 years of experience as a product manager in an agile environment, bringing public-facing web, data, and cloud products to market
  • Demonstrated, hands-on experience delivering real products and features as part of or leading one or more Scrum teams, either as product manager, product owner or Scrum master
  • Experience as a coach or evangelist for agile transformation
  • Experience working on large and cross-functional projects in a complex, policy-driven environment
  • Experience gathering data through user research (establishing KPIs, using Google Analytics, performing usability testing), analyzing data, and applying findings in decision making
  • Excellent project management, communications, and consensus-building skills
  • Ability to balance multiple goals and deadlines under resource constraints
  • Ability to incorporate and diplomatically resolve conflicting directions from multiple management, user, and technical stakeholders
  • Knowledge of the technical software development process and tools, including Jira and GitHub
  • Ability to serve as a “technical translator” for how complex projects translate to business and user value
  • Experience engaging closely with engineering teams to help determine the best technical implementation methods to achieve customer and business objectives
  • The technical depth to communicate with, understand, and earn the respect of world-class engineers and data scientists

Desired Skills/Experience

  • Expertise in UI/UX and user-centered design
  • Ability to understand and analyze data pipelines, algorithms, and automated systems
  • Experience in Cloud platforms (e.g., GCP, AWS)
  • Familiarity with public health, biological sciences, molecular biology, or genetic variation
  • Formal training in computer engineering, software development, or computer science or equivalent hands-on experience
  • Prior product management experience in the biological sciences, particularly molecular biology or bioinformatics
  • Demonstrated active involvement in online bioinformatics community forums (e.g., BioStars, SeqAnswers)
  • Experience with data visualization, accessibility, Search Engine Optimization, and software QA/testing
The compensation for this position will be based on the experience of the successful candidate. The expected pay range for this position is $115,000 to $165,000.
