Job Duties
VDOT's Staunton District Winchester Equipment Shop is seeking a highly qualified Equipment Repair Technician. As the qualified candidate, you will diagnose, repair, inspect and maintain motorized and mechanical equipment related to construction, highway maintenance, grounds, and automotive equipment of all types and in varied locations.
Minimum Qualifications
•Ability to operate various types of light, medium and heavy-duty trucks, equipment and tools in a safe and efficient manner.
•Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
•Ability to obtain Virginia State Inspection License within 12 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
•Knowledge of cutting, welding and fabrication operations.
•Ability to independently perform major repairs and maintenance on a variety of diesel and gasoline trucks and equipment.
•Safety shoes required.
•Knowledge of the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of automotive, construction and maintenance equipment.
•Skill in the use of computers, hand and power tools and advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment.
•Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
•Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
•Ability to read and comprehend service and equipment repair manuals, gauges and testing devices.
Additional Considerations
•ASE certifications.
•Experience using cutting and welding equipment.
•Experience repairing and maintaining a variety of automotive and construction equipment.

VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore,
advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
VDOT is an emergency response agency, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations when services are needed.
NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
