Job Summary :

This position is responsible for performing highly skilled diagnostic, inspections, and mechanical repairs of electrical, electronic, and / or hydraulic systems on a wide variety of automotive / heavy construction equipment.

Job Duties :

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to :

  • Diagnose and repair gasoline and diesel-powered internal combustion engines and operational, mechanical, hydraulic, & electrical malfunctions of equipment.
  • Inspect a wide variety of automotive and / or heavy construction equipment in accordance with safety / scheduled preventative maintenance checklists.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and service / repair a wide variety of automotive and / or heavy construction equipment on-site using a mobile repair / lube truck.
  • Operate vehicles and / or equipment requiring a commercial driver's license.
  • Fabricate and medication of various equipment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) :

Knowledge in :

  • Power / drive train system inspection, diagnosis, and repair procedures.
  • Electrical systems inspection, diagnosis, and repair procedures.
  • Electronic control systems inspection, diagnosis, and repair procedures.
  • Computerized diagnostic analyzer use procedures and practices.
  • Hydraulic systems inspection, diagnosis, and repair procedures.
  • Operating principles of gasoline and diesel-powered internal combustion engines.
  • Fleet maintenance shop safety principles and practices.
  • Record keeping principles and practices.
  • Cutting, welding, and fabrication.

Skills in :

  • Repairing and maintaining mechanical, electrical, electronic, and automotive / heavy construction equipment.
  • Operating computerized diagnostic analyzer equipment.
  • Estimating time cost of repair maintenance work for a wide variety of automotive / heavy construction equipment.
  • Scheduling / coordinating automotive / heavy construction equipment service and repair to maximize utilization.

Ability to :

  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Interpret repair manuals, service bulletins, and recall bulletins.
  • Utilize a PC and PC programs such as Google Workspace and Microsoft Office.
  • Manage time effectively.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs and push / pull 90 lbs; pass a physical exam.

Selective Preference(s) :

The ideal candidate for this position will have :

  • Three years of journey-level experience diagnosing and repairing a variety of light / medium / heavy-duty trucks and / or construction equipment.
  • Automotive Service of Excellence (ASE) Master Certification in Medium-Heavy Duty Truck preferred but not required.
  • EPA Section 609 Certification or the ability to obtain the certification within six months of employment.
  • Successful candidate must have their own tools for the position.

Pre-Employment Requirements :

Employment is contingent upon passing a medical / physical examination.

The position requires possession of a valid Class B CDL or the ability to obtain a Class B CDL within six months of employment.

Must retain said license and any endorsements during the period of employment. Additional endorsements may be required during the period of employment to meet shop mission requirements.

Registration with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse (Clearinghouse) is a requirement for all CDL holders.

Once a Class B permit is obtained, the selected employee will be required to register and authorize ADOT to conduct limited queries on their CDL for the duration of their employment. Register by visiting

As this position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job to conduct State business, then the following requirements apply :

Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver's license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver's license record checks.

The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training.

An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) ).

The final candidate will be required to abide by the the following pre-employment checks :

  • Employment Verification and Reference Checks
  • State and Federal Criminal Background Checks
  • Physical / medical examination

All newly hired State employees are subject to and must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).
