The Verland Foundation Inc is Hiring a Seamstress Near Sewickley, PA

Description

Verland is currently seeking a Seamstress. The Seamstress is responsible for providing quality repairs, design and construction of diverse articles for all individuals. This person will receive direction from the supervisor regarding the type and quantity of items needed. This is an hourly, non-exempt position.

Contributions:

  • Makes and repairs a variety of cloth, rubber, and plastic articles such as drapes, adaptive equipment and equipment covers, linens and personal clothing items, using a sewing machine or by hand.
  • Shops for basic sewing notions with the Facilities Coordinator.
  • Obtains special items needed to create and complete any special projects (e.g., fabrics for adaptive clothing, draperies, and upholstery materials).
  • Obtains proper materials from stock room supplies.
  • Marks dimensions with chalk and cuts out articles with scissors.
  • Applies name tags to individuals' clothing.
  • Assembles cut pieces and secures with pins for sewing, sews articles together using proper color and weight thread and sewing machine.
  • Cuts, sews, and constructs, with proper materials, clothing and other articles as needed by the individuals and by Verland.
  • Mends and hems drapes, towels, equipment / sofa / furniture covers, bed, table linen, and garments using sewing machines or sews them by hand.
  • Measures and alters individuals’ apparel.
  • Keeps a log of completed work and disposition of unusable materials.
  • Records new clothing received and maintains inventory of items dispensed.
  • Records individual purchases of all individuals’ list of sizes; stores and records items purchased.
  • Salvages unrepairable items by making articles of lesser size.
  • Cleans and maintains sewing room and machines.
  • Delivers clothing to the houses.
  • Performs related duties as requested.
  • May only access the minimum information that is necessary to perform job and will comply with Verland’s privacy practices.

Requirements

Ability to operate all necessary equipment to perform duties as required, including sewing machine, surger, etc. Ability to think independently, read, speak, write, make simple mathematical calculations and follow written and oral instructions.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. One year experience as a Seamstress. Some formal training preferred. Basic knowledge of sewing machines. Must have clearances as required by Act 33 and Act 34, as well as a valid driver's license. Must perform duties as Housekeeper/Laundry Worker. Must complete a basic entrance exam as a Seamstress.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Sitting, bending, standing, walking, driving, stooping, reaching, ability to use hands/fingers in repetitive motions and the ability to lift and/or carry up to 50 lbs. independently.
