The Schaumburg Township District Libraryis looking for a Fiction Library Reference Assistant to join ourteam. This is a parttime hourly position requiring to work varioushours as needed.

This opportunity is for a 22.5 hours per week tobe scheduled during library hours; required to work some nights andweekends as needed.

Thehours for the position are :

  • Mondays 8 : 45am 1 : 00pm
  • Tuesdays 8 : 45am1 : 00pm
  • Thursdays8 : 45am 1 : 00pm
  • Fridays 8 : 45am 2 : 00pm

and4

Saturdays of the month from8 : 45am5 : 00pm

Theschedule is based on the needs of the library and could change ifand when needed. Starting pay is $19.30 / hour to $24.

PositionSummary :

TheFiction Library Reference Assistant is responsible for providingreference assistance to patrons in the Library’s Fictionarea;

ensuring the Fiction Desk runs efficiently and represents theLibrary standards; and assisting with adult programs related toreaders’ advisory.

The Fiction Library ReferenceAssistant is responsible for promoting the collection throughdisplays and bibliographies and assisting in the development andimplementation of programs for adults.

Requirementsfor All Employees :

  • Ability to be a teamplayer and workpleasantly and effectively with all patrons staff supervisors andothers.
  • Ability tolearn various job functions perform them correctly and understandthe necessity in overall libraryoperations.
  • Abilityto independently function efficiently in a changing and variedenvironment with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focuson details.
  • Abilityto follow all library policies andprocedures.
  • Demonstrates commitment to incorporatingprinciples of Diversity Equity and Inclusion into everyday work.
  • Successfully complete a backgroundcheck

PublicService

  • Work scheduled hours at the FictionDesk.
  • Assist infacilitating book discussion groups.
  • Assist in developing programs for the FictionArea.
  • Assess patronsneeds effectively and efficiently either in person over thetelephone or in writing.
  • Develop strong research skills and techniquesto help patrons to the fullest degreepossible.
  • Search forlibrary materials by computer and onshelves.
  • Assistpatrons at the online catalog and in the Librarystacks.
  • Reservematerials for patrons when the request is inperson over thetelephone or by email including InterlibraryLoan.
  • Maintainfamiliarity with review sources and fictiontrends.
  • Refer patronsto other departments as necessary to fulfill patronsinquiries.
  • Work withall age groups effectively.
  • Give information based on a primary sourcefrom a reliable authority.
  • Manage and complete special projects asrequested.

InternalService

  • Assist in the compilation of daily andmonthly statistics including : patron interactions in person and bytelephone and reserve questions / assistance.
  • Assist in creating book displaysbibliographies and bookmarks highlighting topics within theLibrarys fictioncollection.

ProfessionalDevelopment

  • Collection :
  • Maintain knowledge of readers advisory issuesand developments.
  • Maintain membership in programming andReaders Advisory professional groups i.e. Adult Reading RoundTable.
  • Maintainworking knowledge of the Librarys reference tools and materials theonline catalog and the Internet.
  • Instruct patrons in the use of the Librarysreference tools and materials the online catalog and theInternet.
  • Maintainworking knowledge of the Librarys circulatingcollection.
  • Community :
  • Stay informed about the names of officialsorganizations clubs businesses schools social agencies etc. in thegreater Schaumburg area.
  • Maintain working knowledge of the servicesand practices of other library systems.
  • Keep apprised of the offerings of neighboringpublic and speciallibraries.
