Virginia Commonwealth University is Hiring a Lead Academic Advisor Near Richmond, VA

Position Summary:
Working independently or with minimal supervision, the Lead Academic Advisor will serve as primary academic advisor and resource for assigned caseload within the unit. In addition to job responsibilities in Academic Advisor 1, 2, and 3, responsibilities may include, but are not limited to those outlined below.
Core Responsibilities:
Advising (55%)
  • Provide academic advising services to assigned students regarding departmental, collegiate, and University policies and procedures; programs of study; and the development of appropriate academic plans in a meeting with students on assigned caseload at least once a semester.
  • Introduce students to opportunities that will enrich their academic experience, facilitate their academic and personal development, and support their educational success.
  • Assist students in identifying their interests, abilities, and academic goals and in making decisions regarding their academic career.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of student information, including all advising interactions.
  • Monitor student progression in degree program to establish advising checkpoints and determine the student's progress in completing degree requirements.
  • Use the Navigate advising platform to establish targeted student outreach for more intensive advising.
  • Identify and assist struggling or at-risk students including making appropriate referrals to University resources and contact continuing students to assist with course registration.
  • Write letters of recommendation and letters of support for student appeals.
Teaching (10%)
  • Teach one Student Success course in fall that helps students learn how to manage the college experience, navigate the University, make informed decisions, and assume responsibility for their academic success.
Collaboration (25%)
  • Collaborate with university partners on matters that impact student recruitment, success, and retention and support departmental and university retention initiatives
  • Participate in recruitment activities, programs, and initiatives including providing advising information to prospective students and/or parents at various meetings such as Orientation, Open House, and Preview Day.
  • Collaborate with UAA Leadership Team to implement unit programs and initiatives (schedule and monitor attendance, manage assessment of programming, confirm room reservation, process advising holds, and manage marketing and promotion).
  • Participate in and provide feedback on training and professional development activities.
  • Serve on the UAA Senior Leadership Team and attend bi-monthly meetings.
  • Under the leadership of an Associate Director, assist with planning and coordination of workshops and programming.
  • Along with other UAA Senior Advisors, monitor the UAA general email account and monitor the division-specific email.
  • Assist with processing ARAC appeals.
Training and Mentorship (10%):
  • Assist UAA Leadership with the training of new advisors including managing training schedule, delivering training for the following: documentation, curriculum/degree system, appointment/walk-in schedule, workflow development, Navigate, and retention tracking .
  • Serve as mentor to other unit advisors including meeting regularly with mentees and providing peer evaluation feedback.
  • Serve as Lead Instructor for UNIV 103 - provide curriculum oversight for the UNIV 103 courses in collaboration with your team colleagues.
  • Assist with program cross-training for academic advisors.
Minimum Hiring Standards:
  • At least 2 years professional experience working in higher education
  • At least one year in UAA with a minimum performance evaluation rating of Successful
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
