Position Summary

The Medical Laboratory Assistant receives and prepare specimens from hospital inpatients, outpatients, and outside account patients for Microbiology testing and Reference Laboratory testing. Provides communication with nursing and medical staff regarding specimens and Microbiology test results.
As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will:

• Assure accurate labeling and test orders

• Use the LIS to review/enter orders for tests and enter patient and specimen specific information

• Triage and transport specimens to the proper testing location

• Using established criteria, reject specimens and communicate such to the appropriate clinician

• Prepare media for inoculation

• Answer telephone calls and communicate test results from the LIS or HIS when appropriate and serves as an information resource for nursing staff and medical staff regarding specimen requirements for Microbiology testing

• Clean and maintain laboratory workspace and equipment

• Perform selected laboratory tests and enter results in LIS

• Coordinate and follow LIS downtime procedures during scheduled and unscheduled computer downtimes

• Assist with inventory unpacking and storage of supplies; distribution of specimen collection and transport devices; maintain adequate supplies in the processing area

• Perform clerical functions including filing workcards, completing documentation and paperwork for referral lab tests, and entry of referred test results

• Perform other duties as assigned

• Project a professional appearance and communication at all times

Minimum Requirements

• High School, Equivalent, or Higher

Preferred:

• Typing, data entry and medical terminology

• One to two years of experience in a medical setting

Other Information

• 20 hours a week

• Weekdays (12 pm - 8:30 pm) with rotational weekends
