Northern Star (Pogo) LLC have a challenging and rewarding opportunity for an Environmental Specialist at our world-class Pogo operation in Alaska on a rotational camp schedule.

What's the role?

The Environmental Specialist reports to the Environmental Superintendent, and the primary role is to support the Environmental Team with sampling, waste management, site inspections, and reporting tasks. The specialist will also support and oversee onsite contractors as needed to facilitate site work. The specialist will support site activities to manage waste streams and act as a first responder for spill response.

Duties include :

  • Conduct compliance monitoring and quality control audits as needed.
  • Write and maintain environmental plans.
  • Understand and investigate permit questions and local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Conduct field inspections, e.g., RTP, DSTF, SWPP, SPCC, Waste, and prepare reports.
  • Understanding and proficiency with general database tools, e.g. ArcGIS, EDMS, INX.
  • Develops and updates waste management policies and procedures.
  • Trains site staff on proper handling of hazardous waste.
  • Collect, synthesize, and report environmental data, such as emission and atmospheric monitoring measurements, meteorological and mineralogical information, soil or water samples, or other field data.
  • Collect data to support determination of validity, quality, and scientific significance, and to interpret correlations between human activities and environmental effects.
  • Implement data collection methods to be employed in research projects and surveys.

What are we looking for?

The specifics:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree or advanced degree in Environmental Science, a technical discipline or the sciences.
  • Proven ability to read, comprehend, and apply information from laws, regulations, permits, reports, technical specifications, safety data sheets and publications.
  • Acquire and maintain DOT 49 CFR shipping certification.
  • Acquire and maintain EPA 40 CFR Hazardous waste management certification.
  • Ocbtain and keep current EPA Method 9 Visible Emissions certification.
  • Obtain and keep current OSHA HAZWOPER training and certification.
  • Flexibility to adapt to improved procedures and practices.
  • Must have good comprehension of safe operating procedures, safety rules, policies, emergency procedures, and MSHA requirements.
  • Must pass a post-offer physical and drug test, as well as a background check.

The Details:

Working a 15 days on followed by 13 days off rotating schedule of days and nights, up to 12 hours a day or more at a remote campsite. Extreme conditions, including but not limited to extreme and changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.

Employees are required to stay on site at the company provided camp during the work rotation. Camp facilities provide dining service, games room, exercise & weight room, sauna, and accommodation rooms. Dormitory rooms have a land line phone, great Wi-Fi & cable TV. Cell service is available through Wi-Fi. The Company provides a bus service to and from Fairbanks, Delta Junction and Tok, Alaska.
