St Andrews Public Service District is Hiring a Laborer Near Charleston, SC

Function: Under general supervision of the Driver, and Route Supervisor, performs routine tasks
associated with the collection and disposal of refuse (including but not limited to garbage, trash,
C&D/household, yard debris, metal ) on property that is under the jurisdiction of the St. Andrews
Public Service District.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Performs general routine duties in the collection and disposal of refuse.
  • Assists Driver in backing up truck using hand motions from rear of vehicle.
  • Maintains safety standards at all times while on SAPSD vehicle(s), when

loading and packing refuse; wears safety uniforms and equipment during
appropriate times.

  • Ensures the equipme nt assigned to (tipper, sweeper, packing controls) be kept
clean and reports any maintenance issues to Driver.
  • Wash assigned truck at the end of each day.
  • Must follow the driver's instructions at all times while en route and at the
landfill.
  • Drives smaller pickup truck when needed.
  • Must wear required PPE -Gloves, safety glasses, masks (when instructed),

proper footwear (work boots or high top sneakers). Dress shoes, loa fers, or
open-toe shoes are NOT authorized.

  • Operate the hydraulics of assigned truck in order to load, pack, and unload
refuse once proper training is complete.
  • Performs other duties as required including but not limited to maintain
cleanliness of all SAPSD vehicles, buildings (new shop floors, doors, bathrooms,
etc.), and lawns at SAPSD properties , pressure wash trucks, pressure wash fuel
tanks, covered parking, cut grass and weed eat on all properties, weed eat pond,
maintain landscape at Admin building,

Qualification, Skills, & Knowledge: Knowledge of the District perimeters and geography.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to operate refuse collection equipment.
  • Knowledge of hazards associated with the operation of refuse equipment and appropriate
safety practices to employ while operating in congested residential and business districts.
  • Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with the public.

Education, Training, Experience:
A diploma from an accredited high school, or GED with completion certificate. No experience
necessary.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk;
handle or operate objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms. The employee is

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds continuously throughout the
work day, even during inclement weather. Specific vision abilities required by this job include
close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to
focus.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee
encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather
conditions. The employee works near moving mechanical vehicles and parts and is occasionally
exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals
and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Work is done at various locations.
