Position Title: Education and Career Advisor, YMCA International Learning Center (ILC) Boston
The Education and Career Advisor is passionate about our mission to support adult English language learners moving into thriving self-sufficiency in the U.S. workforce and culture. The position coordinates with administrative and teaching staff to administer quality programming that supports students' progress toward their next steps in postsecondary education, training, and/or employment leading to a family-sustaining wage.
The ideal candidate will have:
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Team-oriented with a collaborative work style.
  • Demonstrate genuine care and commitment to the learning and growth of immigrants.
  • Proficiency in a language other than English is preferred.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Advanced digital literacy skills, proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
Salary range
Annual Salary: $50,000 - 56,000
Location: YMCA Education and Training, downtown Boston office at 100 Franklin Street
Key Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
Advising (80%):
  • Assist students in identifying their personal educational and career goals and in defining measurable steps to achieve these goals.
  • Provide individual advising sessions with students, document goals and employment status in ILC database-Apricot.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director in conducting recruitment, intake, placement, and orientation processes.
  • Monitor daily morning and afternoon DESE classes to ensure students meet program attendance requirements, and address any attendance issues with appropriate solutions
  • Work collaboratively with fellow advisors to plan and lead classroom activities, workshops, and field trips to facilitate effective goal setting among students.
  • Provide information about necessary steps for career paths of interest to students.
  • Support students in job searching, seeking training programs, or applying to college.
  • Assist with pre-, mid- and post-tests.
  • Help students navigate available resources and social service agencies.
  • Attend bi-weekly advising meetings to address student concerns and share insights and resources.
  • Provide quarterly follow-up of students after leaving program.
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings.
Administrative (20%):
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of funder policies and requirements.
  • Engage in high-quality professional development in accordance with ILC and funder standards.
  • Actively participate in meetings, contributing to the continuous improvement of the program.
  • Administer BEST Plus 3.0, TABE CLAS-E and other ILC tests as needed.
  • Assist with front desk coverage and information sessions as needed.
  • Occasionally assist with other responsibilities as needed.
