Description

 The Controller is responsible for overseeing the primary day-to-day responsibility for planning, implementing, managing and controlling Finance, Accounting, and Administrative activities of the company. They are responsible for maximizing the return on financial assets by establishing and maintaining financial policies, procedures, controls and reporting systems. They also oversee cost and general accounting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll. The selection, training, development and motivation of all finance, and administrative personnel is a crucial responsibility. The Controller contributes to establishing business performance objectives and strategic planning while being held accountable for meeting financial and other objectives. They focus their day-to-day activities and initiatives to achieve near, mid and long-term corporate goals and support the key performance indicators of the Company. The Controller is the most senior member of the Finance and Accounting team. As a key member of the Executive Management team, this position will report to the President. This position description reflects the current assignment of essential functions and is not meant to be all-inclusive. Duties and responsibilities may be assigned or reassigned to this job at any time and may be modified to reasonably accommodate an individual with a disability or for other reasons. 

Essential duties & responsibilities related to this position function include, but are not limited, to the following:

1. Finance (Financial Management, Planning, Reporting & Analysis)

a. Responsible for all banking and finance activities, including negotiating lines of credit and key vendor agreements, as well as reviewing all financial contracts, financing agreements and insurance policies. 

b. Responsible for the company's financial statements, general ledger, cost accounting, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, budgeting, tax compliance, and various special analyses.

c. Responsible for providing accurate and comprehensive financial information to executive management team for long-term financial strategizing, and financial planning. 

d. Assists in financial analysis including risk assessment, analyzing efficiency, and informing policy decisions. 

e. Establish methods and systems for reporting; identify which reports and dashboards to develop and regularly review to monitor company performance and identify issues before they turn into problems. 

f. Improve best practices for cash management, forecasting, and cash flow management for growth. Identify profit drivers and revenue opportunities to channel resources accordingly. Review fixed and variable to costs to identify cost savings initiatives. 

g. Determine working capital needs to support growth, raise funds to expand, or fund a new product/market/venture; leverage existing relationships to help achieve strategic growth initiatives. 

h. Use outsourced expertise to perform key roles that are much more efficient and cost effective than in house resources; evaluate cost-effectiveness across the business and drive efficiency. 

i. Collaborates with HR to negotiate annual benefit programs.

2. Accounting

a. Oversee all aspects of daily accounting operations, with the willingness and ability to manage the details.

b. Assist with operational and strategic issues as they arise and provide recommendations based on financial analysis and projections.

c. Implement and oversee annual operating budget so as to monitor progress and present operational metrics. Engage senior leadership to align financial decisions with short and long-term financial planning and projections.

d. Execute internal controls over the company’s accounting and financial procedures; ensure the company's internal controls and governance processes are sufficient to mitigate all significant risks and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal filing requirements.

e. Approve invoices to be paid and generate accounts receivable reports. 

f. Coordinate with external tax accountants and auditors. 

g. Find areas of weakness in data and reporting systems so to implement changes throughout the organization. Once identified, implement robust and reliable internal systems and controls. 

3. Legal, Compliance, and Relationships

a. Support Executive Team in legal and compliance matters; evaluates and develops strategies to minimize or eliminate legal risk, and oversee operational policy necessities and improvements

b. Assist in the negotiation of all firm contracts including leases, client contract modification, etc. 

c. Leads efforts with all legal and regulatory responsibilities, including contracts, NDAs, licenses, etc.

d. Ensure compliance in all areas of the business, including bank covenants and strategic partnerships. 

e. Manage the relationship with the bank(s) to maximize the available resources at the lowest possible costs.

f. Implement a clear path to ensure maximum financial stability.

4. Leadership

a. Assist with strategic planning, establish and implement goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures.

b. Provide day-to-day leadership and management that aligns with the Company's Mission, Vision, Values. Build effective teams. Develop, motivate and lead a high performing team to foster a success-oriented, accountable culture.

c. Champion the involvement and effectiveness of Team Banneker members of the QMS. 

d. Build and maintain Customer relationships. Participate in local trade, professional, and civic associations as a representative of Team Banneker.

5. Other

a. Participate in sales and business development efforts. 

b. Keep informed of relevant new technology and make recommendations as applicable.

c. Maintains safe, secure and clean work environments. Conduct operations in a manner that promotes safety and compliance to OSHA and other company health and safety standards. 

d. Contributes to maintaining compliance to Quality Management System certifications and participates in projects and initiatives focused on driving Continual Improvement throughout the organization (i.e. Kaizen events). Assists with special projects from time to time and performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education/Experience

- 10 years in progressively responsible financial leadership roles (preferably in a supply chain, logistics, distribution, manufacturing, or similar industry), including a minimum of 5 years Business Experience in Cost Accounting, Controller and/or Financial Analysis; 4-year College Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; MBA or other advanced degree preferred; CPAs highly desired. Experience must reflect direct application of the designated competencies at the senior management level.

- Experience with companies with revenues $10 Million, ideally with clients in the high-end aerospace, defense, industrial manufacturing, commercial distributors, or similar.

- Relevant experience and working knowledge of ERP Systems (preferably Microsoft Dynamics NAV/Dynamics 365 Business Central), HR/Benefits administration, and other associated technology.

- Above average negotiation skills and customer relationship skills.

- Experience working with banks/financial institutions, external auditors, internal controls and compliance related issues.

- Experience in entrepreneurial P&L management, which balances organizational, operational, and financial leadership with the company's growth strategy; direct experience building and maintaining deep relationships with key partners. 

- Knowledgeable of industrial real estate transactions including building purchases, leases, sub-leases, sale leasebacks and other similar real estate transactions.

- Possesses a general knowledge of industry specific insurance products including warehouseman’s legal liability insurance (WLL), general liability insurance (GL), commercial general liability (CGL) and understands the UCC and lien waiver language.

- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and influencing, and negotiating skills; strong verbal and written communication skills in English. Speaks persuasively and clearly in all situations, demonstrates group presentation skills and effectively conducts meetings.

- Critical thinking, analysis and presentation of data, strategic agility, dealing with ambiguity, holistic financial perspective; excellent analytical, reasoning and problem solving skills. A strong ability to look at complex issues from a strategic perspective; to frame issues and create effective plans for execution 

- Able to represent the company in industry related trade groups when required

- Able to travel 10% of the time, sometimes on short notice
