Position: Business Development Sales Representative

Department: Sales

Reports To: CEO or President/Owner

FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary

The Business Development Sales Representative is responsible for commercial HVAC-R and/or food service equipment service agreement sales along with providing customer support for new and existing customers. This role requires a combination of sales acumen, relationship building, and industry related mechanical expertise to deliver service solutions to commercial clients. This is an outside sales position, does not have direct reports, and performs work independently with limited supervision.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

Prospecting and Lead Generation:

  • Identify and research potential clients who may benefit from service agreements in the commercial sector. 
  • Generate leads through cold calling, networking, attending industry events, and leveraging online platforms. 
  • Maintain regular on-going contact with prospective clients through various channels such as phone calls, emails, and in-person meetings.
  • Maintain a pipeline of prospects and follow up on leads in a timely manner. 
  • Expand service sales portfolio by selling agreements to existing service customers. 

Client Consultation, Sales and Contract Negotiation:

  • Collaborate with potential clients to understand their service maintenance needs and preferences.
  • Present the benefits and features of service agreements, including regular maintenance, priority service, and cost savings, to potential clients in a clear and compelling manner and address any questions or concerns they may have.
  • Customize service agreement offerings to meet the specific needs and requirements of each client.
  • Prepares and delivers accurate and thorough sales proposals to clients.
  • Negotiate pricing, terms, and contracts with clients to close sales deals while ensuring profitability and customer satisfaction. 
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders to finalize contracts and initiate service agreement implementation.
  • Meet or exceed sales targets and performance metrics on a consistent basis.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Maintain a strong understanding of equipment systems.
  • Attend trade shows, manufacturer training, and other industry-related events both as a vendor and customer. 
  • Educate clients about the importance of regular equipment maintenance and the potential consequences of neglecting system upkeep.
  • Address technical questions or concerns raised by clients regarding service agreements.

Relationship Management:

  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with clients and other internal and external stakeholders in the commercial industry to grow and expand demand and contract service.
  • Provide ongoing support and excellent customer service by addressing client inquiries, scheduling routine service appointments, and ensuring satisfaction with service agreements.
  • Manage existing preventative maintenance agreements and renewals to ensure customer satisfaction and continuation of service.
  • Serve as a brand ambassador to promote a positive company image and brand growth. 
  • Set and achieve individual goals and support department goals by contributing to a team environment.

Market Research and Analysis:

  • Collaborate with technicians, sales team members, and other departments within the company to coordinate sales efforts and deliver exceptional service to clients.
  • Communicate regularly with owners and service management to provide updates on sales activities, challenges, and opportunities in the service agreement market.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate records of proposals, sales, contracts and client relationship activities.
  • Prepare sales reports and forecasts to track progress towards sales targets and goals.
  • Provide timely and accurate information to management for decision-making purposes.

Marginal Functions/Responsibilities

  • Assist with equipment sales as needed.
  • Assist with technical support for technicians and customers as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by authorized personnel.

Skills/Abilities Requirements

  • Strong understanding of HVAC-R and food service equipment systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service, sales, presentation and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to learn, understand and communicate company products and services.
  • Ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced and at times stressful environment.
  • Computer proficiency and experience with common software applications.
  • Ability to effectively learn new software applications independently. 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Demands

Stationary Position Able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.

Move Frequently required to stand, walk, bend, crawl, and sit.

Operate Frequently operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer. Frequently operates a motor vehicle. 

Ascend/Descend Occasionally ascends/descends stairs to access all facility levels and/or a ladder to maneuver around equipment and commercial buildings including rooftops.

Positions self Occasionally required to work in restricted spaces, from a prone position.

Communicate Able to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. 

Observe/Inspect Able to observe details at close range, distance range, peripherally and with the ability to adjust focus.

Transport Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Occasionally required to lift/push/carry up to 50 pounds. 

Exposed to Occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
