The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is Hiring an University police officer Near Weslaco, TX

To enforce the law, provide service, information and aid to all citizens as circumstances require, assist and support victims of crime, prevent crime, suppress disturbances, investigate criminal offenses, and arrest offenders.

Serves as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act).

Responsible for law enforcement duties for the protection, safety and welfare of students, faculty, staff, visitors, and all property under the control and jurisdiction of The University of Texas System, including primary law enforcement jurisdiction in all counties where the UT System has real property interest and general law enforcement jurisdiction in all other Texas counties.

Exercises independent judgment and discretion within the limits prescribed by law, Rules and Regulations of the Board of Regents, institutional rules and regulations and the Office of the Director of Police (ODOP) / University of Texas System Police (UTSP) departmental policies and procedures.

Description of Duties To perform law enforcement duties on the property under the control and jurisdiction of the University of Texas System or as otherwise authorized or required by law.

Preserve the peace by the use of all lawful means, interceding, when authorized by law, to prevent or suppress crime. Execute all lawful process.

Arrest offenders with and without warrant when authorized by law. Investigate criminal offenses to detect and arrest criminals, and recover stolen or lost property.

Attempt to locate missing persons. Enforce traffic law by detecting violations, making violator contacts, placing violators in custody or issuing citations or warnings.

Investigate motor vehicle collisions. Prepare various written reports narrating law enforcement and police activities. Give credible and accurate testimony in the criminal courts of this state and the United States.

Confers with prosecuting attorneys, preserves evidence, and maintains confidential information. Confers with local law enforcement, criminal justice and emergency response agencies on matters of mutual interest.

Provides assistance and support to the victims of crime. Supervision Received Direct supervision of work by Sergeant or other supervisor.

Supervision Given None. Required Education High School Diploma or GED, successful completion of a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) approved Basic Peace Officer Course (or the equivalent as authorized by law and ODOP / UTSP policy), has successfully passed the TCOLE peace officer licensing examination.

Preferred Education 60 college hours from an accredited college or university. Licenses / Certifications None. Required Experience To be considered suitable for employment, applicants may be required to successfully complete a polygraph interview, a criminal back ground check, and an extensive drug use analysis.

Preferred Experience Possess Basic Peace Officer Certification and Peace Officer license from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).

Successful completion of the prescribed Field Training Program as provided by ODOP / UTSP policy. Equipment Proficient with all equipment utilized in the performance of assigned duties, to include but not be limited to firearms, restraints, less lethal force weapons and techniques, vehicles, communications equipment, computers, investigative and surveillance equipment.

Working Conditions Exposure to outside weather and inclement conditions. May be required to work either day or night on a variety of shifts with varying days off and on holidays.

Work involves a degree of hazard (e.g. physical engagement with / use of defensive tactics with combative or resisting offenders and suspects) and physical danger.

Other Must be qualified to hold and must meet the requirements of a Peace Officer Commission issued by the Director of the Police of The University of Texas System, and a valid driver’s license not subject to suspension.

Must be eligible to drive a University owned or leased motor vehicle. Must meet certain prerequisites established by the Office of the Director of Police, the Board of Regents, and the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.

Must have the physical and mental capabilities to properly carry out responsibilities and duties as a commissioned police officer of The University of Texas System Police.

Must pass a written entry examination and physical agility test. Must comply with all applicable ODOP / UTSP policies as established by the Director of Police.

Must successfully complete a minimum six-month probationary period immediately following commissioning as a Police Officer.

Must be qualified to be armed at all times when on duty and must be qualified and prepared to execute the obligations, duties and responsibilities of a Texas peace officer.

This position is classified as security-sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51., Texas Education Code.

Good physical condition and vision, ability to hear and speak; vision and hearing standards are established by TCOLE and followed by UTSP policy for compliance purposes.
