FIREFIGHTERDepartment: Fire Pay Grade: 109 FLSA Status: Non-ExemptPersonnel Status: Regular Full-TimeJob SummaryThis position is responsible for performing emergency and non-emergency duties in support of the department’sfire prevention and fire suppression activities. This position reports to the Fire Sergeant.
Essential Job Functions
  • Responds to emergency fire and medical service calls.
  • Responds to motor vehicle accidents.
  • Operates and maintains equipment and fire apparatus.
  • Performs fire prevention and related activities.
  • Completes required training.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Qualifications Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Qualifications
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission.
  • Meets the requirements of the career development guide in force.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Knowledge of the geography and streets of the City of Auburn and surrounding areas, including hydrant locations, the layout and location of public utilities, and the location of potentially hazardous materials and substances.
  • Knowledge of current fire suppression and firefighting techniques, including related equipment.
  • Knowledge of fire record systems, communications equipment, fire computer applications and fire reporting procedures.
  • Knowledge of hydraulics as applied to pump operation and fire equipment.
  • Knowledge of all safety practices involved in fire suppression and firefighting.
  • Knowledge of EMT medical care.
  • Knowledge of local government operations, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs.
  • Skill in making determinations as to the best course of action for fighting fires or responding to other emergency situations.
  • Skill in remaining calm and carrying out duties with the recognition of the threat to life and property.
  • Skill in decision-making and problem-solving.
  • Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to meet and deal with employees and the public in an effective and courteous manner.
  • Ability to get along with others, and work effectively with the public and co-workers.
  • Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
  • Ability to work independently, work well with others, and manage time effectively.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS The work is heavy to very heavy work, which requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work is typically performed while intermittently walking, sitting, standing, crouching, climbing, bending, or crawling, or stooping. The employee uses tools or equipment, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
WORK ENVIRONMENT The work is typically performed in a fire station and various outdoor environments. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, cold or inclement weather, and conditions associated with emergency and fire scenes. The employee is also periodically exposed to extreme environments such as burning buildings. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc., as well as other specialized firefighting equipment.
