Roanoke Cement is Hiring a Quality Control Lab Technician Near Troutville, VA

Roanoke Cement, a Titan America business, has an excellent opportunity for a Quality Control Lab Technician based in Troutville, VA. This is a salaried non-exempt position reporting to the Lab Supervisor. In this role you will play a crucial role in ensuring the quality and integrity of our cement products. You will be an integral member of our Quality Control Team and collaborate with our production team to conduct various tests and analyses on raw materials, intermediate products and finished cement.

Key Responsibilities:

· Ensure a safe workplace is maintained, based on company policies and MSHA guidelines.

· Perform chemical and physical tests according to ASTM standards.

· Provide vacation relief for process control and physical testing employees.

· Test water samples as required by VA Department of Environmental Quality Permit.

· Collect all material samples necessary to ensure quality control.

· Process data from chemical and physical analyses to generate reports (daily, weekly, monthly).

· Test specialty masonry products for color match during production.

· Audit lab equipment regularly to troubleshoot and perform maintenance tasks; in addition to providing recommendations for improvement.

· Source and place orders for new lab equipment as needed.

· Implement and administrate new lab procedures.

Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience with chemical background is desirable. (Knowledge of elements, oxides, and raw materials will be considered an asset.)

· Must be flexible to work various shifts; including holidays, nights, weekends, and overtime as needed.

· Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills are essential.

· Proficiency in Excel and Word is required.

· Familiarity of automation lab equipment will be considered a plus.

· Must possess strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects.

· Ability to work independently and recognize opportunities for improvement.

· Willingness to accept responsibility and adapt to change.

Physical Requirements:

  • Position involves working in an industrial environment, obtaining samples in all weather conditions, heavy lifting, and standing for extended periods of time.

· Working from Heights: Ability to work from heights as high as 100 feet.

· Lifting and Carrying: Lab technicians may need to lift and carry materials, equipment, and samples, which can vary in weight (25-75 pounds). This could include lifting bags of cement, containers of raw materials, or lab instruments.

· Standing: Lab technicians often spend a significant portion of their workday standing while conducting tests, preparing samples, and operating lab equipment.

· Dexterity: Precise hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills are essential for handling small samples, operating laboratory instruments, and conducting intricate tests.

· Manual Labor: Some tasks may require physical effort, such as mixing samples, grinding materials, or operating machinery.

· Mobility: Technicians may need to move around the laboratory to access equipment, materials, and workstations. This may involve walking, bending, and reaching.

· Visual Acuity: Lab technicians must have good vision to read labels, observe samples, and record data accurately. Corrective eyewear may be necessary.

· Hearing: Good hearing is important for communication with colleagues and for detecting any unusual noises from equipment or processes.

· Safety Gear: Depending on the laboratory's safety protocols and the materials being handled, lab technicians may need to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, safety vests, safety goggles, and respirators.

· Chemical Exposure: Lab technicians should be able to work safely with chemicals and be aware of the potential hazards associated with them. This includes following safety procedures and wearing appropriate PPE.
