DescriptionProvides assistance and expertise in various areas of research such as preparation of results for presentation, monitoring test subjects, gathering and entering data, ensuring adherence to procedures, and basic analyses of data.
- Ensures experiments are performed according to specifications.
- May make practical recommendations to changes in procedures as appropriate.
- Applies basic skills and develops advanced skills.
- May assist with some advanced functions.
- Solves most routine problems while referring more complex questions to higher levels.
- Receives direct supervision but is expected to select from a variety of standard procedures to complete tasks.
The Technical Assistant will manage, operate and update workstations for structural biology, including cryo-EM and molecular dynamics, using relevant software (CryoSPARK, Relion, Phenix, AMBER, NAMD, OpenMM, etc). The Technical Assistant will also manage support on storage units, and administer online repositories and webservers. The Technical Assistant will serve as the direct liaison with vendors, providers and services, including the UH Research Computing Data Core https://uh.edu/rcdc/ and the SBGrid consortium https://sbgrid.org/. The person hired will act as the local contact for lab members, and organize user training. The Technical Assistant will have the opportunity to work closely on research projects with all lab members and participate in data analysis and processing, as well as project direction.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and maintain workstations with all their components (GPU, CPU, terminals, etc.)
- Maintain tech inventories and ensure timely ordering and receiving of material
- Coordinate regular equipment maintenance with external vendors
- Administer online repositories, backups and systems (GitHub, Docker, etc)
- Install and operate pipelines for data processing and analysis
- Manage storage units
- Maintain accurate, well-organized record of purchases, licensing fees, deadlines
- Work with all lab members
QualificationsHigh school and No experience
Preferred QualificationsTwo years of CS or IT experience (optional: in a professional setting)
Salary: Commensurate with experience
