Old Sturbridge Academy Charter Public School is Hiring a School Nurse (Grades K-8) Near Sturbridge, MA

Old Sturbridge Academy Charter Public School is seeking a talented Registered Nurse to serve as a School Nurse for grades K-8. The School Nurse enhances the educational process by removing health barriers to learning through planning, implementing, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating health services in the school. Successful candidates will possess experience working in diverse schools with English Language Learners and students with disabilities. The school nurse must possess a passionate commitment to the health and wellness of students and maintain the current health program. The school nurse is a vital member of the school team who manages and leads system development to advance health and wellness and collaborates with school staff members, families, and community members.

The school nurse reports to the Head of School.

Through project-based learning, case studies, field work and more, Old Sturbridge Academy fosters intellectual curiosity and encourages students to become articulate communicators, critical thinkers, and skilled problem solvers who care for themselves, others around them and their communities.

About the School

Old Sturbridge Academy Charter Public School opened in 2017 and serves 360 students in grades kindergarten through eighth. We believe in hands-on learning that focuses on three levels of student achievement: mastery of knowledge and skills, character, and high-quality work. Our school’s habits of character, which define our culture, are courage, collaboration, stewardship, perseverance, and high-quality work.

Responsibilities

· Provide health care through assessment, intervention, and follow-up, including extensive case management and family support for high-need cases and/or communication with students’ doctors and health care providers

· Provide episodic and emergency health care to ill or injured students

· Engage in public health functions such as disease surveillance, immunization compliance, and health promotion

· Maintain accurate records of health files for each student with up-to-date, cumulative medical health and vaccination records

· Maintain log of medication administration, assessments, interventions, and communication with families

· Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and school policies

· Train unlicensed school personnel to administer scheduled medication and epinephrine per the State regulations

· Educate students and staff on health procedures and policies

· Facilitate referrals to appropriate medical and community-based resources

· Co-chair the health and wellness committee of Old Sturbridge Academy

· Maintain health cabinets with all necessary medical supplies including safe handling, storage, and disposal of prescription medications and hazardous wastes

· Coordinate hearing, vision, and dental screenings, exams, and treatment

· Develop Individual Health Care Plans and Emergency Action Plans for students with special health needs, and include in section 504 plans or Individualized Education Plans (IEP) as applicable; identify students with potential health-related learning needs and coordinate with Director of Students Supports

· Maintain privacy and confidentiality of student's health and medical information following State and Federal Laws, including FERPA and HIPAA

Qualifications

· Bachelor's Degree (Required) Master’s Degree preferred

· Current DESE licensure as a school nurse (preferred but not required)

· Licensure as an RN in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

· Current certification for CPR, AED and First Aid by the American Heart Association as a Health Provider

· Certification of completion of the Medication Administration and Delegation training program of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) within the past five years [or a willingness to obtain training prior to start of school year]

· Extensive experience working with children with severe food allergies (preferred)

· Knowledge of medical disorders and treatment; child growth and development; public health problems and procedures for treatment in coordination with other health and social service agencies; universal precautions; federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services; district policies, procedures, rules and regulations ; FERPA and HIPPA regulations

· Knowledge of digital software and platforms used in a school health office

Compensation: Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience.
