St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office is Hiring a School Resource Officer Near Slidell, LA

Department: Criminal Patrol – District III
Reports To: Captain

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Salary Range: $44,910 – $54,826

SUMMARY - Provide law enforcement services to the school, school grounds and areas

adjacent to the school by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be

assigned.

Abide by school board policies and shall consult with and coordinate activities through the school

principal but shall remain fully responsive to the chain of command of the law enforcement agency in

all matters relating to employment and supervision.

Develop expertise in presenting various subjects; particularly in meeting federal and state mandates in

drug abuse prevention education and shall provide these presentations at the request of the school

personnel in accordance with the established curriculum.

Encourage individual and small group discussions about law enforcement related matters with

students, faculty, and parents.

Attend meetings of parent and faculty groups to solicit their support and understanding of the School

Resource Officer program and to promote awareness of law enforcement functions.

Serve as a member of the school student services committees and will be familiar with all community

agencies, which offer assistance to youths and their families such as mental health clinics, drug

treatment centers, etc., and may make referrals when appropriate.

Confer with the principal to develop plans and strategies to prevent and/or minimize dangerous

situations on or near the campus or involving students at school-related activities.

Perform duties as determined by the principal other than those regularly assigned to school personnel

such as lunchroom or hall duty. (Nothing herein is intended to preclude the SRO from being available

in areas where interaction with students is expected.)

Abide by school board policy and applicable law concerning interviews should it be necessary to

conduct formal law enforcement interviews with students or staff on property or at school functions

under the jurisdiction of the School Board.

Take law enforcement action as necessary and notify the principal of the school as soon as possible;

whenever practicable, and advise the principal before requesting additional enforcement assistance on

campus and undertake all additional law enforcement responsibilities at the principal's direction.

Give assistance to officers in matters regarding the duties of SROs whenever necessary.

Coordinate with the principal and be responsible for law enforcement and security activity at extra-

curricular events as determined by the principal.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES - This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS - To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform

each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE - High school diploma or general education degree
(GED).

LANGUAGE SKILLS - Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating
and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write court worthy routine

reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or

employees of organization. Must be proficient in the English Language.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS - Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of

measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY - Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of

situations. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or

schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS - Valid Louisiana Motor Vehicle

Operator's License; proof of residency of St. Tammany Parish (voter registration card); birth

certificate (minimum age of 21 years); and Social Security Card. P.O.S.T. Level 1 Certification.
Maintain firearms qualifications in accordance with St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office policy.

Two or more years of law enforcement experience required. Criminal Patrol FTO Certification.

Must possess the ability to obtain the SRO Certification within one year of acceptance of the
Position.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit;

use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee is

occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl or run. Must have the
ability to lift and drag a minimum of 100 pounds. Deputy is required to wear a duty rig which

weighs on average between 20-25 pounds and is preferred to wear a bullet proof vest weighing on

average 5 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance

vision, color vision, and depth perception.

WORK ENVIRONMENT - The work environment characteristics described here are

representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather
conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise
