ALLEN MARINE TOURS is Hiring a Port Engineer Near Sitka, AK

Job DescriptionSummary: Under the direction of the Vice President, this position is responsible for oversight of the engineering team and the Alaskan Dream Cruises fleet of vessels. The Port Engineer manages all maintenance, repairs, and vessel equipment/machinery. The successful candidate will create and implement a preventive maintenance system, along with managing engineers to ensure all maintenance and repairs are being carried out on the vessels throughout the year.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Must possess current Drivers’ license and have record with no recent violations.
  • Applicant should be able to pick up at least 50 pounds in line of duties.
  • Be comfortable working around diesel engines, vessels, and in tight working spaces.
  • Supervision of all engineering personnel (including when vessels are in and out of port).
  • Mentor, coach, and train the vessels engineers.
  • Approve/generate requisitions for spare parts, supplies, and vendor services.
  • Determines method, length, and cost of necessary repairs.
  • Prepares specifications, scheduling, and management of shipyard periods.
  • Acts as project manager for all engineering projects.
  • Candidate is responsible for screening, interviewing, and hiring the vessels engineers.
  • Create and implement a preventive maintenance system.
  • Must be self-motivated and be able to work unsupervised.
  • Conduct regular inspections of vessels to identify any potential issues and develop plans to address them.
  • Must be able to work varied shifts, some weekends, and some holidays.
  • Remain on call during non-working hours.
  • Must be drug free (pre-employment screening and enrollment in random drug testing program is Coast Guard required).
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum three years Port Engineer experience with a record of managing shipyard projects.
  • Experience aboard ships as a Marine Engineer
  • 10 years total experience, including relevant education or shipyard/military experience.
  • Strong project management skills and technical knowledge.
  • Knowledge and understanding of vessel construction and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of marine engineering to include electrical systems.
  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings.
  • Ability to create and maintain an effective preventive maintenance system.
  • Effectively manage a budget, reduce spending, and have the knowledge on parts and equipment procurement.
  • Work safely in a fast-paced environment.
  • Create a maintenance inventory (i.e. lube oil, filters, tools, etc.).
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Keep dock and shop areas clean, safe, and free from hazards to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Travel is occasionally required to other ports in Southeast Alaska.
  • May occasionally fill in on vessels in Chief Engineer’s absence.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in marine engineering/naval architecture or equivalent experience.
  • Three years’ experience in a similar position with progressive responsibilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to build and maintain strong relationships.
  • Excellent report writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and be hands on as needed.
  • Familiarity with U.S. Coast Guard regulations and general maritime law.
  • Proficient with computers, technology, and the Microsoft Suite

Work Environment:
Ability to work flexible schedule to include weekends and holidays. Must be comfortable working in small, enclosed, dusty, noisy, and sometimes hot or cold environments. Willingness to work very late, or very early.

Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Ability to walk on uneven deck surfaces crossing from vessel to vessel. Able to bend, twist and squat regularly throughout the day.
