Schaumburg Community Consolidated School District... is Hiring a Benefits Specialist Near Schaumburg, IL

12-month full time position, non-exempt, 37.5 hour work week


Job Summary:
To support District 54 employees by coordinating all employee benefits, including health, dental, vision. life, wellness and flexible spending plans.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Serve as an ongoing resource to employees on eligibility, enrollment, claims processing, insurance cards and other matters relating to the benefit programs.
  • Provide customer service to employees with resolving individual issues they may experience.
  • Organize and coordinate all areas of the open enrollment process. This includes, but not limited to, drafting open enrollment correspondence to eligible staff, collecting and processing new enrollments and changes, and communicating changes to the payroll department.
  • Using established policies, correspond with employees who are terminating employment to inform them of their insurance continuation rights under State and/or Federal Law.
  • Participate in the yearly insurance renewal process through attending benefit committee meetings.
  • Review, support and approve all insurance enrollments and terminations.
  • Manage and implement the plan documents for each of the various insurance programs as set forth by the District.
  • Correspond with D54 insurance broker, and/or billing representatives regarding any billing issues or invoice corrections needed.
  • Serve as liaison between insurance providers and District employees.
  • Participate in new hire orientations.
  • Offer monthly benefit enrollment support.
  • Prepare communications for employees regarding policies, qualifications, enrollment, program changes involving the employee and their benefits.
  • Ascertain that all plan documents and contracts are current, signed, and filed.
  • Ensure that program brochures, enrollment forms, and claim forms are up-to-date.
  • Maintain accurate benefit records for each employee including beneficiary designations.
  • Reconcile monthly billing invoices and reports from insurance providers for accuracy, eligibility levels and proper coverage.
  • Be knowledgeable of payroll software and schedule for insurance enrollment.
  • Review employees insurance deductions, gross-ups and other benefit program changes to the payroll system.
  • Verify bi-weekly payroll deductions.
  • Maintain an awareness of changes in benefit law.
  • Coordinate and oversee the District’s Vaccine Clinic and Wellness Fair.
  • Annually host the ABCD’s of Medicare.
  • Serve as the district’s privacy contact for HIPAA.
  • Process employee record changes (name and/or address changes).

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Knowledge of insurance benefits and benefit continuation regulations required
  • Experience in working with employee benefits is preferred but not required
  • Ability to independently prioritize own work and manage multiple projects and deadlines, with attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a proven record of building rapport with staff, administrators, and representatives from outside organization.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to handle or feel materials. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
