US BUREAU LAND MANAGEMENT is Hiring an Engineering Equipment Operator Near Roswell, NM

Duties

This position is located in a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) office. The primary purpose of this position is to operate one or more types of gasoline or diesel powered engineering and construction heavy equipment in flat or rolling terrain environments with simple terrain problems only. In addition, the position may perform various non-series controlling related duties up to the WG-08 level.

  • Operate heavy equipment close to buildings, towers, trees, drop-offs, waterlines, and rocks.
  • Operate crawler tractor on flat or rolling terrain in grading surfaces, compacting soils, and/or spreading surfacing materials to exact specifications.
  • Troubleshoot and perform repairs to a variety of heavy mobile equipment and vehicles by removing, adjusting, or replacing defective or worn parts and components.
  • Follow written instructions, maintenance standards, and standard operating procedures to perform tasks.
  • Determine the proper tie-down requirements for transportation of heavy equipment based on the weight of the machine being transported, and the capacity of the fasteners being used to secure the load.
  • Use equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level earth to rough specifications on such projects as breaking new ground for trails, roads, dams, dikes, reservoirs, culverts, water developments.
  • Knowledge of water pipeline systems related to cattle grazing uses.

  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a physical examination.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the Bureau of Land Management uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate special endorsements.
  • You will be required to wear all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) associated with the job.

Qualifications

To qualify, there is no specific length of training or experience required; however, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to show your ability to perform the duties of a Engineering Equipment Operator without more than normal supervision. Examples of such experience include: (1) operating gasoline or diesel-powered equipment such as road graders, bulldozers, excavators, backhoes, or trench diggers in all terrain environments; (2) maintaining and/or repairing roads, ditches, shoulders, or roadbeds; (3) conducting equipment and/or motor vehicle routine/minor preventive maintenance, repairs, and/or safety inspections; (4) interpreting OSHA standards and an organization's safety regulations in order to work in a safe manner.
SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position performs operation of vehicles, and a class Commercial Driver's License with appropriate special endorsements is required. You must be able to obtain one before entry on duty. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by entry on duty will receive no further consideration for this position

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Part-time or Unpaid Experience: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position.
Physical Effort: Heavy physical effort is required in constantly climbing in and out of different machines, and pushing and pulling levers continuously while machine is in operation. Work is strenuous because of the equipment operated, and the adjustments made. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating the equipment. The incumbent is required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds and often puts forth similar effort when pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning equipment and tools.
Work Environment: The operation of gasoline or diesel powered engineering and construction equipment increases exposure and risk of injury. The incumbent works both inside and outside and is exposed to hot and humid weather and/or extremely cold weather with temperatures ranging from below 0 to above 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Ice, road oils, and other items such as loose gravel and rocks may create hazardous conditions. The operator is subjected to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, oils, solvents, and fumes from motors and exhausts. When working inside, the incumbent must ensure proper ventilation to minimize fumes caused by equipment or vehicles. The incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, abrasions, bruises and strains while operating equipment. The incumbent is required to follow all prescribed safety practices and use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as protective hearing devices and hard hats to prevent injury.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
