Job Description: Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist

Position Title: EHS Specialist
Department: Quality Control
FLSA Classification: Full-Time, Exempt Professional
Work Location: Fall River, MA
Work Hours: General Shift: 8 AM – 5 PM (may vary based on business needs)
Reports To: Environment Health and Safety Director

Purpose:
The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist (EHS Specialist) is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing workplace health and safety program changes. This role involves interpreting policies and procedures as they apply to environmental health and safety practices.

Scope:
This job description provides a general overview of the role, responsibilities, and expectations for the EHS Specialist. It is not exhaustive and may be modified based on departmental needs, education, relevant training, and experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in environmental, health, and safety, interacting with internal and external customers.
  • Develop hazardous and chemical waste programs in compliance with Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Department of Transportation (DOT), and other regulations.
  • Ensure programs and practices comply with relevant statutes, regulations, and environmental, health, and safety requirements.
  • Investigate incidents, identify corrective and preventative measures, and respond to questions or complaints from within the organization, customers, and regulatory agencies.
  • Conduct risk assessments to identify, evaluate, and control hazards.
  • Perform audits and evaluations to ensure company compliance with laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Conduct effective training on occupational safety, chemical safety, hazardous waste management, and other topics, documenting all activities.
  • Continuously identify and implement industry safety best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with data integrity and cGMP practices, procedures, and expectations.

Education and Experience:

  • Relevant EHS work experience in a cGMP manufacturing setting.
  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety or a closely related field with seven (7) years of progressive responsibility in implementing safety and health programs in a manufacturing environment, or a master’s degree in Occupational Safety or related field with five (5) years of relevant experience.
  • Excellent organizational, learning, and teaching skills required to work in teams.
  • Strong focus on safety, continuous improvement, and risk mitigation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Strong command of the English language, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent presentation skills, documentation, and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical and non-technical information clearly across all organizational levels.
  • Strong collaboration and facilitation skills.
  • Adaptability to change and ambiguity.
  • Proactive work ethic.
  • Ability to work under general supervision with a focus on both tactical and strategic execution.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Work in a cGMP laboratory or manufacturing environment requiring personal protective equipment.
  • Exposure to solvents, powders, and other materials in a pharmaceutical setting.
  • Sitting at a desk or working at a computer for 25% or more of an 8-hour period.
  • Ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) or gear.
  • Physical exertion including standing, walking, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, and reaching.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull objects up to 50 pounds with or without accommodation.
  • Moderate exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

Other Job Information:

  • Position available to existing employees currently working in the EHS function as part of an intracompany transfer.
  • Relocation negotiable.
  • No remote work available.
  • Extended work weeks may be required based on business needs, including Saturdays, Sundays, or holidays.
