Job Description

IMPORTANT NOTE:

The NYC Department of Finance (DOF) is responsible for administering the tax revenue laws of the city fairly, efficiently, and transparently to instill public confidence and encourage compliance while providing exceptional customer service.
The New York City Sheriff’s Office serves and enforces court mandates, orders of protection, warrants, decrees, and property seizures. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office conducts criminal investigations of real property fraud, tax crimes, and the trafficking of illegal and untaxed tobacco products and synthetic narcotics.
Under supervision, with some latitude for independent or unreviewed action or decision, performs work of varying degrees of difficulty and responsibility as a law enforcement officer, acting for and in the name of the New York City Department of Finance - Office of the Sheriff ("City Sheriff") in carrying out duties as prescribed by the Civil Practice Law and Rules and other laws, including, County Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Penal Law, and Family Court Act. Operates a motor vehicle. In addition to performing duties of Assignment Level I, engages in the supervision of deputy sheriffs. May be assigned to handle cases of a higher degree of difficulty.
  • Executes mandates and orders resulting from litigation, issuing from local or State Courts of competent jurisdiction, or occasionally from courts of other states, the Federal Government, or foreign countries.
  • Executes process involving the seizure of property pursuant to writs, warrants, garnishments, and other valid court orders, and is responsible for the safeguarding and sale of property thus seized.
  • Gives actual possession of real property under writs of assistance and warrants of eviction.
  • Makes service of processes, such as summonses and complaints, subpoenas, citations, petitions, orders, or other papers.
  • Apprehends persons pursuant to warrant of arrest and other court orders. Escorts prisoners to and from jails, court, and medical facilities, assuming responsibility for their care and custody, and guarding against possible escape.
  • Preserves the peace and public order, makes criminal arrests, issues accusatory instruments for criminal offenses and violations.
  • Conducts surveillance and operates surveillance equipment.
  • Enforces security procedures on assignment.
  • Testifies at hearings or in court.
  • Attends and supervises all aspects of Sheriff's sales and prepares certificates of sale and other papers incidental thereto.
  • Maintains records of activities and of all monies collected and makes regular weekly and monthly reports thereon. May evaluate subordinates’ performance.
  • Uses automated office systems and other computer technology to input and retrieve information, including identifying judgment debtors.
Some of the physical activities performed by Deputy City Sheriff II and environmental conditions experienced are: working outdoors in different types of weather; walking and/or standing in an assigned area during a tour; driving or sitting in a patrol car during a tour while remaining alert; running after a fleeing suspect; climbing upstairs; gripping persons to prevent escape; restraining a person by use of handcuffs; engaging in hand-to-hand struggles to subdue a person resisting arrest; being physically active for prolonged periods of time; understanding verbal communication over the radio with background noise; reading and writing under low light conditions; carrying or wearing heavy equipment and uniform; and wearing a bullet-resistant vest. In addition, Deputy City Sheriff II must carry a firearm.
Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; or
2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and two years of honorable full-time U.S. military service or satisfactory professional or paraprofessional experience in law, accounting, auditing, criminal justice, business
administration, public administration, investigation, civil enforcement, law enforcement, or closely related fields; or
3. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. College education can be substituted for the required experience in "2" above on the basis that each 30 semester credits is equated to six months of experience. However, all candidates must have a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization.
Special Note:
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II, individuals must have at least one year of experience in Assignment Level I or as a law enforcement officer.
