Giles County School District is Hiring a Diesel Technician Near Pulaski, TN

Purpose StatementUnder the direction and supervision of the Transportation Supervisor, the Technician shall service and maintain all vehicles that pertain to the Giles County Board of Education. Technicians should be able to plan, schedule, repair, and perform preventative maintenance for the transportation fleet as needed; ensure the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition, and provide written documentation of repairs to meet state and federal requirements. GOAL: To provide the school system with safe, well-maintained transportation equipment to meet the needs of the educational program.

Essential Functions
  • Diagnose, remove, and assemble body and chassis components from any vehicle; clean, inspect, rebuild, and assemble new or original parts; reinstall components and make necessary adjustments.
  • Diagnose potential vehicle malfunctions(e.g.using computer diagnostic equipment) for the purpose of determining needed repairs and/or replacement.
  • Inspect, clean, adjust, tighten, and/or repair minor items such as lights, bulbs, lenses, reflectors, etc.
  • Repair items such as kingpins, springs, shocks, leaf springs, and spring pins.
  • Perform tune-ups; troubleshoots and repairs engines; rebuilds if necessary; must be able to perform complete engine building for both gasoline and diesel engines without hands-on supervision.
  • Replace and repair brakes, steering repairs, electrical repairs, air conditioning, and heat repairs.
  • Replace or repair minor body parts, floors, fenders, and dents.
  • Inspects and repairs wiper motors, switches, arms, and blades.
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain after treatment systems.
  • Perform minor repairs as requested on daily vehicle inspection reports in a timely fashion.
  • Tire repairs; lube oil and filter changes; mirror replacement; minor road service; service fuels and fluids.
  • Repairs hydraulic wheelchair lifts and hydraulic lift gates; installs seat belts and harnesses on Special Needs buses.
  • Prepares vehicle maintenance reports and submits them to Shop Foreman.
  • Performs tire work (e.g. changing, balancing) for the purpose of ensuring all buses and equipment are operating on safe tires.
  • Responds to emergency situations during and outside regular work hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns, including emergency breakdowns and service, general property maintenance, etc.
  • Substitute as a bus driver when needed for the purpose of ensuring a qualified person is able to run the bus on the route.
  • Train mechanic helpers for the purpose of helping them learn the correct and safe way to repair and maintain vehicles.
  • Transport various items (e.g. tools, equipment, supplies) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at the job site.
  • Assist in the starting of vehicles during winter months.
  • Coordinates with Transportation Shop Foreman on warranty and recall service.
  • Be “on call” outside of regular work hours as necessary for emergency breakdowns and service and general maintenance.
  • Maintain inventory of parts and supplies.
  • Participate in the general cleaning and maintenance of the school bus garage, clean shop floor, drain pan, buckets, etc.; dispose of unusable replacement parts such as batteries, brake drums, etc.; dispose of used motor oil, transmission fluid, and antifreeze.
  • Service buses for monthly maintenance. Service other vehicles owned by the Giles County Board of Education.
  • Assume responsibility for the general security of the school bus garage building.
  • Knows how to move or recover a vehicle that has failed on the road or been in an accident.
  • Personal safety requirements:
    • Wear goggles when operating power tools.
    • Use tools safely and keep them in safe working order.
    • Report all accidents to the shop foreman.
    • Consider the safety of those around you while working
    • Conduct yourself in a manner that will earn the respect of your fellow employees.
  • Attends work regularly and punctually.
  • Perform other duties as determined by the Transportation Manager or Shop Foreman.
  • Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes and airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
  • 25 Year old or older
  • Knowledge of vehicle repair
  • Mechanical skills
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Ability to use power and hand tools
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to read service and repair manuals
  • Ability to acquire a CDL with a PS Endorsement
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks in a timely fashion
  • Must obtain own tools
Physical Requirements
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • Must be able to work safely in a noisy area with many odors present.
  • Must regularly be able to lift 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
