MISSION AND NEED

Holy Family Institute (HFI) is a 120-year-old Catholic organization with an impeccable history of serving children and families in the Pittsburgh Region. We are one of Pittsburgh’s largest social service organizations operating 15 programs in three counties. We are an independent organization guided by Catholic Social Teachings and serving people of all faiths and backgrounds.

General Statement of Duties: The ESL Teacher will provide instruction in basic English to international students. ESL certification preferred. Final approval for hire will be done by the Project Officer of the Office of Refugee and Resettlement which is a sub-agency of the Department of Health and Human Services of the federal government. The Teacher is to promote a positive climate of learning and excellence where students can enhance their developmental growth. The census of the JOH program varies and to maintain a full-time position, teachers will be assigned to support or provide services to other departments within JOH and/or other programs at Holy Family Institute and Nazareth Prep.

Essential Functions:

• Promote the mission and philosophy of Holy Family Institute
• Knowledge of second language acquisition, techniques for teaching English, ability to conduct appropriate assessments for program placement and monitoring student achievement.
• Must be flexible and willing to adapt to a non-traditional school setting.
• Willingness to collaborate with other teachers to maintain a creative yet structured learning environment.
• The teacher will lead full group lessons, small group instruction and may be asked to provide 1-on-1 tutoring.
• Must be open to alternative, whole language, whole child teaching methods.
• Incorporate classroom activities, routines and procedures that will prepare students for eventual transition to a public-school setting.
• Conducts frequent evaluation of student progress.
• Maintains communication with director, staff, etc.
• Adheres to other requests as indicated by supervisor

• Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in education required. Master’s degree preferred.
• ESL Certificate preferred.
• 1-2 years teaching experience required.
• Ability to perform the essential job functions consistently, safely, and successfully with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
• Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards
• Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone.
