Sign on Bonus # Relocation Available for Experienced Candidates# Statement of Purpose This generalist position performs clinical testing in all laboratory areas for use in diagnosis and#treatment of disease. The technologist obtains or receives specimens, performs clinical laboratory#tests by standardized procedures, understands method principles, performs quality control, performs#preventative maintenance, and interprets results as to accuracy, acceptability and critical limits. The#technologist works independently, organizing work to meet job competence.#Adheres to hospital and laboratory policies and procedures including but not limited to safety,infection control, personnel, and disaster.#This position requires effective communication and interpersonal skills. The employee must#conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the philosophy of the hospital. Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities A. TECHNICAL SKILLS 1. Collects venous or capillary specimens from patients of all ages for processing#according to standard protocol. Perform primary patient ID, labels specimens#correctly and clearly. Encourages newborn/toddler to communicate by smiling, talking softly, etc.; insures#proper patient identification; helps to educate parent(s) regarding whatever#procedure is being done. Encourages child to ask questions about whatever procedure is being done; use a toy#or game to teach the child and to reduce fear; keeps parent(s) involved in whatever#follow-up procedure might be necessary. Shows respect for the adolescent patient#s opinions, and avoids an authoritarian#approach; explains the procedure in detail and encourages questions from patient. Gives the geriatric patient every possible assurance regarding the procedure being#performed; assists the patient in terms of any necessary self-care; encourages the#patient to take advantage of any support system that may be in place. 2. Stores and/or transports samples using appropriate prescribed preservation methods. 3. Following prescribed procedures; performs testing in any laboratory section. 4. Operates and maintains clinical laboratory instruments and/or equipment. 5. Maintains prompt and accurate records. 6. Operates LIS and HIS computer system according to established guidelines.#Informs lab Director of computer related any problems. 7. May evaluate new tests and methods, and recommend procedural changes. 8. Consults with Laboratory Supervisor, Laboratory Director or Medical Director#regarding difficult analyses or abnormal B. ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS 1. Maintains inventory of supplies and reagents, reporting shortages according to#established procedures. 2. Prepares and submits all necessary reports on a timely basis, to include but not#limited to QA documentation and reports, transfusion reports. 3. Aids in the revision and update of procedure manuals to assure accreditation#compliance using CAP guidelines yearly documented review mandated. 4. Assists in evaluating and implementing new media, reagents, testing procedures,#protocols and instrumentation according to established criteria. 5. Participates in training of new technologists to ensure complete orientation. 6. Works with Supervisor/Laboratory Director in a laboratory area to submit monthly#QC, review maintenance records, resolve testing or related problems or concerns,#maintain section#s manual and assist with training co-workers. 7. Assist Supervisor and Director to ensure compliance with JCAHO, CAP, AABB,#CLIA#88, FDA and any other regulatory entities. 8. Provides support for LIS maintenance and updates. 9. May be asked; during the combined absence of Supervisor or Director, to serve as a#supervisor performing functions and provide problem resolution. C. QUALITY ASSURANCE/QUALITY CONTROL 1. Conducts performance checks and calibrates instruments in designated area. 2. Evaluates media, reagents and standards according to established criteria. 3. Conducts and documents established quality control procedures on analytical tests#and instruments. 4. Evaluates results of QC, implements corrective action when indicated, and#documents action taken. Brings unresolved problems to attention of technical#supervisor or lab manager. 5. Recognizes biohazardous specimens and processes the specimens accordingly. 6. Observes established safety and infection control procedures. D. INTERPERSONAL/PROFESSIONAL BEHAVIOR 1. Minimizes absences and reports to work in a dependable manner. 2. Complies with appropriate, approved departmental dress code. Wears identification#badge. 3. Conducts self in a professional manner. Demonstrates consideration for patients, coworkers and all other persons involved in the health care delivery system. 4. Practices ethical standards in all matters relating to medical information and the#patient. 5. Establishes orderliness in the work place and writes legibly. 6.
