We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Fisheries Biologist to join our team. The successful applicant will play a crucial role in conducting scientific research and contributing to the development of advanced knowledge of oceanography, lower-trophic levels and exploited species to a range of NOAA assessment products,including stock assessments of plankton, integrated ecosystem assessments, and environmental impact assessment. ```Responsibilities```
- ● Sort plankton samples to remove larval fish, eggs and cephalopods.
● Re-box and catalog archived plankton samples dating back to the early 1970s. Recover archived data for this sampling and enter data from paper records into an electronic database as necessary.
● Identify, measure and quantify ichthyoplankton or zooplankton. Age larval fish and squidparalarvae using otoliths and statoliths. Training will be provided for NEFSC techniques and species-specific taxon.
● Analyze data using Excel, R or Matlab.
● Contribute to or lead written reports and peer reviewed publications on research results.
● Participate in ongoing plankton monitoring program, including at sea collection of plankton samples, and shoreside organization and archiving of samples.
● Contribute to educational outreach programs including participating in lab tours and school visits.
● Attend and/or participate in conferences and training opportunities and other duties deemed helpful to the Branch
● Contribute to a more organized and collaborative atmosphere
```Experience```
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in marine biology, ecology, zoology or oceanography, or related field
-7 to 14 years relevant experience
- Experience in the use of microscopes.
-Experience with using identification keys to identify marine taxonomic group; familiarity with techniques for measuring and quantifying ichthyoplankton and zooplankton; familiarity with aging techniques for larval fish
- Demonstrated proficiency in the following areas:
o Strong record keeping and organizational skills.
o Basic data entry and analysis, including some familiarity with common data
manipulation and analysis software tools like Excel, Matlab or R.
o Independent worker with strong time management skills.
o Adaptability to quickly changing priorities and strict timelines.
o Attention to detail.
● Willingness to participate in research cruises of approximately two weeks in duration.
