Varsity Tutors is Hiring a Remote Principal Software Engineer (South America)

Description:

We are looking for a Principal Engineer to help us evolve our technical vision and architecture for Nerdy. In this position, you will design and architect systems that cross every team at Nerdy and across every functional area. Nerdy serves many customers, including students, parents, tutors and schools. Our solutions are wide and deep at the same time. They include both the learner and tutor UX, our live learning platform where sessions take place, and the Machine Learning platform to find the best tutor for each learner, plus much more.

As a Principal Engineer you will be expected to define and drive Nerdy’s technical vision and architecture, amplifying approaches by aligning the organization toward coherent architectural strategies. You will also architect the most complex systems at scale and possess expert knowledge in performance, scalability, systems of systems, machine learning delivery pipelines and engineering best practices. Lastly, we expect you to lift the entire tech organization up, leading by example and actively mentoring the team on advanced technical issues, and helping managers guide the career growth of their team members. Intellectual curiosity is essential in this role combined with big thinking and grit to deliver against your vision together with your team.

Qualifications:

  • 10 years experience with a combination of coding and big data processing
  • 3 years experience leading engineering teams of 3 or more engineers in the successful delivery of modern architected distributed software systems
  • Experience architecting and building SOA microservices for full stack UX and API layers in a Cloud-based environment, AWS Cloud preferred
  • Experience with event driven architectures and ecosystems
  • Experience with NoSQL databases: AWS DynamoDB, Redis, etc.
  • Experience with CI/CD deployment systems (e.g. CodeShip, AWS CodeDeploy)
  • Experience communicating with both technical and business people including executives. Ability to speak at a level appropriate for the context
  • Familiarity with AWS Services (e.g. RDS, Kinesis, EC2, et cetera)
  • Familiarity with the Linux Operating System and command-line tools
  • Understanding of OO design, algorithms, and data structures
  • Experience with efficient processing of large data systems with big data technologies such as Hadoop, Spark, Hive or Storm.
  • Aptitude to quickly learn new languages and technologies as necessary
  • Understand and appreciate that Nerdy is an apolitical company and that we can have the largest impact if we are united in our focus on helping people learn and not divided or distracted by advancing unrelated causes.

  • Write automated tests to thoroughly validate the correctness of your code
  • Deploy large-scale web applications
  • Have a focus on quality, and operate iteratively to get from good to better
  • Be a part of your team’s on-call rotation; we all own our code end-to-end from development to deployment to operations
