About the Role

The Vice President of Development executes and leads all aspects of development for Guest House of Milwaukee including individual giving, proposal development, grant reporting, donor presentations, digital communications, online giving campaign, development collateral, and prospect research. As a member of the executive team, the Vice President of Development is a critical collaborator in the development and facilitation of organizational strategy. With a new CEO focused on external engagement, Guest House has re-invigorated the energy of the organization with many of our existing partners. This position is key to continued growth and requires a professional ready to build and grow our impact. This position supervises two development and engagement support staff currently but will grow as funding increases to ensure a capacitated development function.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and oversee fundraising initiatives including planning and managing major gifts, planned giving, grants, annual giving, and special fundraising events and campaigns. This position is not responsible for municipal service delivery contracts for Guest House
  • Plan and implement strategies to secure donors and contributions.
  • Establish short- and long-term goals for fundraising campaigns and efforts.
  • Determine a strategy to achieve short- and long-term goals through grants, sponsorships, gifts, donations, and fundraising events.
  • Contributes to expansion by masterminding opportunities to increase revenue streams and raise awareness of the organization’s fundraising efforts.
  • Analyze revenue and fundraising trends and forecast opportunities for financial growth to minimize downtrends and financial risks.
  • Assess and develop fund development infrastructure needs/systems.
  • Oversee fundraising events to ensure fundraising goals are met.
  • Oversee reporting requirements for grants.
  • Research funding opportunities for the program.
  • Develop, write, and review grant proposals, requests, and communications to stakeholders.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with donors and communicate the progress of their donations.
  • Foster relationships with key stakeholders and translate the organization’s values, needs, and innovations.
  • Collaborate with executive team, lead resource development strategies, and measure financial progress against short-and long-term goals.
  • Provide innovative solutions to increase fundraising impact.
  • Grow and oversee fundraising staff.

Experience & Competencies

  • Demonstrated passion for Guest House’s mission, vision, and values; keen ability to communicate the necessity for a more just and equitable society through housing security in compelling ways that create shared meaning and commitment to action.
  • Demonstrated track record of effective solicitation, including a proven record of accomplishment in individual, corporate, and foundation, relations; planning, implementation, management, and successful conclusion of a major campaign are highly desirable.
  • Several years’ experience building, developing, and retaining strong relationships with donors and volunteers, including board members. A collaborative and communicative workstyle that translates into strong results with donors as well as internal partners.
  • Results-oriented with an ability to make human-centered decisions in a fast-paced, changing, and interactive environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide management oversight, leadership, and strategic direction; ability to develop trust and strong collaborative working relationships; experienced team builder who can coach and empower staff to meet their individual and collective goals with support.
  • Strong competency in leading others to focus on results, thinking creatively, establishing clear direction, and navigating change through organizational transition. and setting objectives, and monitoring progress and results in a deadline driven environment.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to best practices in nonprofit management; the ability to assess and evaluate staff and programs to make changes.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: negotiation, problem-solving, decision-making, and delegation abilities
  • Highly organized, ability to think strategically, attentive to detail, a forward thinker and planner.
  • Vision and ability to cast goals and seeks ways to improve and expand the mission.
  • Experience contributing to the development of systems and operations.
  • Excellent written and communications skills
  • Proficiency in the use of Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Word
  • Dedication and commitment to socially-responsible objectives, values, and practices
  • Experience working with diverse groups and teams.
  • Demonstrated budget and project management skills and an ability to motivate and lead others including staff and all levels of volunteers.
