POSITION DETAILS

New York City College of Technology of the City University of New York (CUNY), a comprehensive college in downtown Brooklyn offering 60 associate and baccalaureate degrees, invites applications for a Student Psychological Counselor to provide mental health counseling and support services through the Counseling Services Center.

The mission of the Counseling Services Center is to support the educational, emotional and career development of City Tech students by providing opportunities for skill development, counseling and referrals that address obstacles to success. Counseling Services provides consultation and time-limited mental health counseling, as well as academic and career support services to all matriculated students. This office also provides supervision and support to the Veteran’s Support Services Office. In addition, the center now offers clinical supervision to a select group of master’s level City Tech employees who wish to earn hours towards their NY State license in mental health counseling by providing counseling services to students. The Student Psychological Counselor/Crisis Services will support the functioning of counseling and veteran support services by facilitating access to mental health and community-based services. They will provide direct mental health and college student adjustment services.

Reporting to the Director/Associate Director of Counseling Services, the Student Psychological Counselor will:

  • Work in collaboration with both Counseling and Veterans Support Services
  • Provide short-term psychological and crisis counseling to the general student population as well as military connected students (student veterans, servicemembers, and military dependents).
  • Serve as a resource to faculty and administrative staff who teach students, providing insight into the impact of mental health issues and college success.
  • Provide clinical supervision to select City Tech employees earning practical hours towards a NY State license in a mental health profession.
  • Maintain records of student contacts.
  • Engage students who are not connecting with campus services.
  • Provide student advocacy in relation to college offices and community agencies.
  • Conduct student development workshops.
  • Perform administrative responsibilities as needed.
  • Participate in assessing and recommending improvements that will impact the Counseling and Veterans Support Services Office effectiveness.
  • Participate actively in outreach initiatives regarding mental health and wellness.

QUALIFICATIONS

A Doctoral degree in Psychology to include Ph.D. and Psy.D. programs, or a Master's degree in an appropriate discipline for personal or psychological counseling.

A New York State license as a mental health practitioner (social work, psychology, or mental health counseling).

In addition, six years of related, postbaccalaureate, professional experience are required for all candidates.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in serving the general college student population and the mental health needs of student veterans.
  • Ability to coordinate programming and liaison services with both campus and community resources.
  • Ability to provide clinical supervision to City Tech employees seeking NY license in a mental health counseling profession.
  • Cultural competency and experience providing counseling services to a diverse student body in a higher education setting.
  • Experience dealing with issues related to personal, academic and career development.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Proficiency in using computers and standard MS Office programs (e.g. Word and Excel).

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$82,928 - $96,602. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
