City of Midlothian is Hiring an Utility Crew Leader Near Midlothian, TX

Position Summary

Starting Hiring Range: $48,193.60 - $59,030.40, annually
Under general direction of the Utility Foreman, this position supervises the Utilities crew.

Essential Job Functions

  • Maintains the water and wastewater systems by repairing water and sewer main breaks.
  • Oversees and assists in the installation, maintenance, repair, or replacement of water/wastewater mains or services.
  • Supervises individuals on the Utilities crew in the field to ensure all work tasks and objectives are completed as planned.
  • Trains employees in the proper operation, maintenance, installation, and repair of the water and wastewater systems.
  • Possesses a working knowledge of the City of Midlothian's water/wastewater system.
  • Logs work orders, water bypasses, leaks, and main breaks.
  • Helps locate water and sewer lines for other utilities.
  • Utilizes gas measuring systems.
  • Processes records on pumpage and inventory control.
  • Completes daily reports.
  • Resolves customer complaints due to water leaks or sewage stoppages.
  • Works in collaboration with Foreman, keeping the Foreman informed as various work tasks and situations arise.
  • All other tasks and duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED equivalent, is required.
Two years of utility maintenance and equipment experience is required.
Experience as a supervisor is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The following is required and must be possessed by incumbent:

  • Ability to interpret and apply established rules, regulations, and procedures related to utility maintenance.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear, effective, and concise manner, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
  • Ability to supervise and monitor performance for a group of employees or work unit.
  • Skilled in the operation of equipment, such as backhoe, front loader, excavator, skid steer, etc.
  • Ability to operate a variety of hand tools and equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Good knowledge of waste and wastewater systems and its operations.
  • Ability to evaluate, observe, and inspect the effectiveness of optional processes and equipment.
  • Ability to be organized and have efficient management of time and deadlines.
  • Knowledge of and ability to correctly interpret practices, requirements, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to follow instructions, safety practices, procedures, and perform work accurately and thoroughly which requires performing multiple tasks simultaneously under time pressures and deadlines.
  • Ability to allocate and utilize limited resources in a cost-effective manner.
  • Skill and ability to utilize computers, tablets, and related software applications such as Microsoft Office, Excel, etc.
  • Ability to be punctual and attend work regularly.

Special Requirements

Mobility within a field and outdoor environment is required.
Subject to be on-call during non-working hours.
Must be available to work during severe weather events.
This position is classified as a DOT position and is subject to regulated random drug and alcohol testing during the course of employment.


Licenses & Certifications

Water Class C (Distribution) and Wastewater Class C (Collections II) licenses required.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record as established by the City of Midlothian driving standards.
Class A Commercial Driver’s License is required or must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.


Work Environment

Work involves continuous outdoor work with frequent exposure to extreme and inclement weather conditions, disagreeable elements, and noise. Working environment includes the potential of exposure to dust, chemicals, and mechanical hazards. Occasional exposure to moving traffic, confined spaces, loud noises, fumes, irritants, rodents, and insects. Physical demands require a heavy strength level frequent lifting, carrying, and loading/unloading of objects weighing up to 80 lbs., and occasional pushing and pulling objects up to 100 lbs. Continuous physical exertion and repetitive motion, requiring heavy muscular effort with resulting fatigue of arms, legs, back, or sensory faculties. Climbs, kneels, squats, stoops, bends, or walks in confined spaces. May be subject to extended periods of sitting, standing, bending, reaching, kneeling, walking, and operating equipment.
