POSITION : Bus Driver PART TIME ACTIVITY

EXEMPT STATUS : Non-Exempt

NUMBER OF DAYS : 185

PAY GRADE : AUX-BD

DIVISION

DEPARTMENT : Transportation

REPORTS TO : Transportation Director, Supervisor, and Routing Specialist

Position Function / Purpose

Ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on the assigned route. Operate a school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated locations.

Major Responsibilities

Vehicle Operation

  • Follow the assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
  • Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities.
  • Check the bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify the supervisor of needed repairs.
  • Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures. Complete required reports.
  • Keep the assigned bus clean and fueled.

Student Management

  • Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
  • Communicate with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior while on the bus.
  • Maintain discipline; report student discipline problems to appropriate administrators.
  • Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.

Safety

  • Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
  • Inspect the bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure the bus can be operated safely before driving.
  • Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflector.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in the work area that could cause an accident and inform the supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable immediately.
  • Report any hazardous conditions along the route.

Other

  • Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with the transportation office.
  • Work irregular hours as needed.
  • Attend and complete the required training program to maintain safety certification.
  • Keeps records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of Driving safety rules
  • Demonstrate the ability to work well with fellow personnel
  • Execute DOT inspections and Pre Trip and Post Trip inspections
  • In - service Training - will need to obtain a minimum of 65.5 hours per school year.
  • Follow policies and procedures regarding student bus discipline
  • Demonstrate punctuality when performing duties
  • Follow policies and procedures related to absence from duty
  • Responsible for safely loading and unloading students, following health and safety protocol, and performing emergency evacuation drills.
  • Responsible for the assignment of seats for students and oversee the student rosters
  • Responsible for servicing and upkeep of buses and performing exit checks.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and provide great customer service when working with students and parents
  • Operate all Midland ISD vehicles for routing and extracurricular purposes.
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform duties as assigned by supervisor
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by Director of Transportation

Qualification Requirements

  • Valid Texas commercial driver's license (Class B), Passenger and School Bus Endorsement.
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Ability to pass alcohol and drug test
  • Ability to read and write English
  • Ability to complete required bus driver safety training
  • Ability to obtain a Texas School Bus Certification
  • Ability to Pass an annual Physical
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Knowledge of student discipline procedure
  • Ability to manage student behavior
  • Ability to operate bus
  • Minor computer skills needed
  • Physical examination to determine fitness to drive a bus
  • Valid Texas Drivers License and acceptable driving record; must adhere to Midland ISD's vehicle safety and use program
