SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is Hiring a Safety specialist Near Menlo, CA

Position Overview :

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory’s Environmental Health and Safety Division is seeking a Health and Safety Specialist with a strong background in Health Physics to join our Radiation Protection team.

Members of this team are responsible for supporting all aspects of radiological designs and operations in support of the mission of SLAC, and manage SLAC's Laser Safety program.

Reporting to the Operational Health Physics Group Leader, this position will perform a full range of radiation protection responsibilities independently and will collaborate with scientific and technical staff at SLAC and serve as the liaison with regulatory agencies as needed.

As the Radioactive Waste Group Leader this position provides direct supervision to the assigned technical staff and develops, implements and oversees program functions for the management of radioactive and mixed wastes in accordance with regulatory, DOE and policy requirements.

Health Physicists have a wide variety of technical, operational, and project management responsibilities in support of Department's mission at SLAC.

The main responsibilities are to provide high level technical support and expertise for the Radiation Protection Program (RPP) development, advancement, implementation, and management of one or more RPP programs.

Your specific responsibilities include :

Lead and supervises SLAC’s Radioactive Waste Management Group. Coordinate the disposal of low-level radioactive and mixed waste.

Plan and manage waste disposal campaigns. Maintain relationships with transportation subcontractors and disposal facilities.

Conduct routine / annual submittals to DOE and other regulatory agencies. Develop and maintain Radioactive Waste Management Group procedures.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain programs, systems, and procedures necessary to ensure the overall safety and health for radioactive waste management operations.
  • Act as a lead or technical expert, providing functional direction and training in the overall application of the radioactive waste management program.
  • Conduct comprehensive, independent compliance assurance reviews of environmental, health, and safety policies and procedures;

prepare accompanying management reports, documentation and evaluations.

  • Investigate accidents, incidents, injuries, and complaints concerning potential hazards or unsafe conditions in the work place.
  • Recommend and implement improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize the hazard potential.
  • Directly supervise and provide guidance and development to individual contributors, including contractors and matrixed staff, external to the organization.
  • Develop and monitor budget for assigned area.
  • Other duties may also be assigned

To be successful in this position you will bring :

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering or related allied / scientific / engineering field and seven years of progressively responsible experience or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience including :
  • Extensive hands-on technical experience in radiation protection.
  • Experience with management of radioactive and mixed waste programs within DOE environment.
  • Knowledge of analytical instruments such as gamma spectroscopy, X-Ray Fluorescence.
  • Experience with policy and program development, and implementation and auditing.
  • Advanced degree and / or certification(s) may be required for some programs, for example radioactive waste shipper training.
  • Ability to manage environmental, health, and safety functions and staff.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Ability to interpret and apply regulations.
  • Ability to ensure environmental, health, and safety program compliance.
  • Ability to assist with conducting environmental health and safety related risk assessment, mitigation, and crisis management.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to cultivate strong and collaborative relationships inside and outside the organization.
  • Ability to lead professionally in emergency / crisis situations.
  • Computer skills including the use of word processors, spreadsheet and presentation programs, radiological analysis and modeling software such as Microshield.

A background in one or more of the following is desired :

  • Extensive Knowledge of Department of Energy, Department of Transportation, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Environmental Protection Agency, and California regulations regarding the handling and transportation of radioactive materials and wastes.
  • Experience working with and supervising bargaining unit employees
  • Ability to work extended hours and occasionally travel when required.

Certifications and Licenses :

  • Department of Transportation (DOT) Advanced mixed waste shipper certificate required
  • IATA Hazardous Goods, Radioactive Material shipper, and Advanced Mixed Waste shipper certificates required within one year of hire.
  • Specialty training in radiological control as reflected by National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists certification, or certification by the American Board of Health Physics, is desired.

The expected pay range for this position is $137,000 to $157,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory / Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
