GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES FOR A TOP TRIMMER:

Under the direct supervision of the Foreman, a Trimmer A (Top Climber) plans, assigns, directs, checks and coordinates the work of the crew in the Foreman’s absence. Is responsible for quality and quantity of production and for seeing that the crew follows safe practices and rules. Performs duties of a Trimmer and other work of the crew, as required, in addition to the leading responsibilities.

Qualifications for Top Trimmer:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Demonstrated ability to work safely, follow instructions and ability to complete all required paperwork.
  • Demonstrated safe climbing experience from both climbing and operating a bucket with line clearance, trimming trees and pulling overhang off three-phase power lines. Must be able to work at heights of 100 feet. Must be proficient at climbing, performing lift operations and performing tree rescues. Must have proven tree identification knowledge. Must have working knowledge of safety procedures, chainsaw use, climbing and knot-tying. Must be able to effectively and professionally communicate with coworkers, landowner customers/members, as well as community such as police or fire department personnel in cases of blocking streets or driveways, etc. 
  • A proven record of being dependable and conscientious about their work performance. Must be regular in work attendance.
  • Must have, maintain a class (A) CDL license with air brake endorsement or ability to obtain one within a reasonable period after starting the position. Certifications or interest to become certified with R.T., Arborist or Utility Arborists are preferred but not required.

Adverse Working Conditions –

Works outdoors the year around under adverse weather conditions, especially during emergencies and sometimes when performing routine work. Works any hour of the day or night and for long periods at a time during emergencies. Is exposed to hazards of working near power equipment, traffic, high voltage wires, and falling limbs. Does considerable walking and standing involving ground conditions of deep mud, snow, swamp, and poisonous plants. As contact person with customers, general public, etc., is subject to attack by vicious dogs and smaller pets.

Public Contact –With Members, property owners, general public, contractors, and representatives of utilities and governmental agencies. Tree trimming and removal work is a controversial subject with the public, and therefore workmanship, performance, actions and appearance of crew will determine whether customers will grant permission for future trimming.

Physical Requirements:

These positions are classified as Very Heavy Work under the DOL classifications. The positions requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds across uneven terrain. May also need to lift and move logs or branches up to 80 pounds frequently.
Position is physically demanding and mobile, reaching, balancing, and crawling are daily activities.

Ability to periodically crawl beneath large equipment or trees with little ground clearance to maintain equipment.

Trimmer A must be able to ascend and descend trees that are up to 100 feet tall while maintaining safety protocol.

Safely utilize chainsaw, pole saw or handsaws, and other hand tools as needed to complete tasks.

Ability to maintain a CDL and drive company vehicles to and from worksites.
