New Leaf Energy, Inc. is Hiring a Transmission Planning Engineer Near Lowell, MA

We identify high-value sites, work with landowners and local communities to develop them, and partner with long-term asset owners to bring the most impactful clean energy projects to life.
New Leaf Energy, Inc. is seeking a Transmission Planning Engineer to join our growing interconnection team. Our ideal candidate will have experience in power systems and an in-depth understanding of how distributed generation interacts with existing distribution and sub-transmission systems. You will have a lead role in New Leaf Energy's Transmission Prospecting campaigns and will work closely with internal stakeholders from the interconnection, project development, and Finance teams to identify potential PV sites, help define prospecting strategy, and perform transmission analysis for New Leaf Energy's Projects.

Externally, you will work collaboratively with 3rd party consultants, utility and ISO engineers, and other industry professionals to advocate for New Leaf Energy's Utility Scale Portfolio. You will also evaluate utility study deliverables and provide guidance to the development team on project changes and opportunities to leverage available capacity.
This position may be filled out of our Lowell, MA, Boston, MA, or Oakland, CA offices. We value in-person collaboration and offer a hybrid work environment. Hybrid employees work in the office at least two out of every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and are free to work from the office or from home on other days.
Position responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
  • Serve as regional Planning Engineer for multiple ISO territories;
  • Provide guidance to developers by helping them navigate the Transmission network to identify system capacity and optimal locations to Interconnect projects;
  • Develop Transmission Network Models using PSSE, TARA, or other similar tools;
  • Perform Transmission System analysis such as Power Flow, Stability, Reactive Power Compensation, etc.;
  • Evaluate utility impact studies with the ability to challenge study methodology where appropriate;
  • Assist project developers in the evaluation of potential Project sites to determine project feasibility and potential network upgrades and cost;
  • Well-organized self-starter with a genuine drive for success and executing on both short- and longer-term strategic goals;
  • Exhibit knowledge and understanding of T&D protective relay schemes.
Desired Qualifications:
While no one individual will possess them all, the successful candidate will bring many of the following experiences, skills, and attributes.   • 3 years of power engineering experience, with desired specialty in transmission planning;
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, or relevant study;
  • Strong understanding of transmission system impacts associated with the interconnection of distributed energy resources (DER), as well as knowledge of engineering solutions to mitigate those issues;
  • Knowledge and understanding of T&D protective relay schemes;
  • Ability to successfully lead strategic initiatives in a fast-paced and challenging team-based multi-stakeholder environment;
  • Well-organized self-starter with a genuine drive for success and execution of both short- and longer-term strategic goals;
  • Experience with power systems modeling software such as PSSE, PSCAD, PSLF, SKM/ETAP, Aspen, etc.;
  • MS EE preferred.
Compensation
New Leaf Energy compensates all employees in three ways: market-competitive base salary, plus above-market variable compensation, plus an equity-like program such that all employees experience the benefits of ownership. We use a data-driven and transparent methodology to calibrate compensation that is externally competitive and internally equitable, guided by the New Leaf Energy compensation manual, which is available to all employees.
Under our compensation framework, the likely base salary range for this position in the Lowell location is $127,050 - $142,570. The on-target annual cash bonus associated with this position is an additional 10% percent of base salary. Your actual salary may be above, in, or below this range, depending on your location and experience.
