Job Title: Animal Care Attendant

Location: Largo, MD

Hours: 9:30 am - 7:30 pm 

Days: T-F or W-F (1 day on the weekend is mandatory) 

POSITION SUMMARY - CMT is seeking a Animal Care Attendant

This is full performance level service maintenance work responsible for the overall care of animals in the custody of the County’s animal shelter. The Animal Care Attendant II ensures that policies and procedures are followed to ensure the daily needs of the animals and facility are met. Incumbents at this level must be able to use advanced techniques when working with animals and have knowledge in the use of animal related devices and safety equipment.

Work assignments are performed in accordance with departmental standards, rules, and regulations and are performed under the general supervision of an Animal Care Attendant Supervisor.

Animal Care Attendant II incumbents are responsible for ensuring animals receive the proper kind and quantity of food and sufficient water. In addition, some portion of the duties of this class involve cleaning and maintaining sanitary conditions at the Animal Control Shelter.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs initial health assessment of animals arriving at facility.
  • Assists with vaccinations, intake exams and other medical procedures.
  • Maintains and updates data files with pertinent information on animal intake and health information on animals received and in the shelter.
  • Assists with euthanizing sick, injured and unwanted animals in accordance with regulations and standard veterinary procedures.
  • Performs day-to-day tasks required for the general operation and maintenance of the animal shelter.
  • Performs shelter duties including taking reports from the public, receiving animals brought to the shelter, reclaiming animal to their owners and transporting animals to veterinarians.
  • Provides information relating to shelter policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Responds to inquiries from citizens, rescue groups, and others regarding; appropriate choices for animal adoption, rescue, placement, and proper care.
  • Participates in adoption and community outreach events.
  • Cleans and disinfects animal enclosures, cages, equipment, walkways, and work areas including; vehicles, vehicle caging, and other equipment.
  • Prepares food, feeds and provides water for shelter animals.
  • Monitors sick, quarantined, and injured animals, observes them for unusual physical and behavioral conditions may segregate and isolate them as necessary.
  • Trains staff and volunteers in safe, humane, and efficient care of animals of the shelter.
  • Refers animals for veterinary care emergency and/or routine.
  • Assists veterinarian and provides necessary after care for treated animals.
  • Enter animal related information in the database accurately and according to departmental guidelines.
  • Assists the Animal Health Attendants with various duties.
  • Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties which may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but which are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employees class of work.
  • This Position is the late shift 11:00am-10:00pm weekdays plus a Saturday or Sunday its Mandatory
  • Bilingual Preferred- Spanish and English 

Minimum Qualifications/Skill Set

  • High School diploma or GED plus six (6) months experience in humane animal care and treatment, animal shelter operations and laws governing animal protection and control.

ELIGIBILITY TO WORK

  • Knowledge of characteristics, behavior, and common breeds of domestic animals.
  • Physical activities such as long periods of standing and/or walking, repeated bending, climbing, kneeling, reaching, stooping, or crouching, lifting, and carrying animals weighing up to one hundred (100) pounds.
  • Knowledge of the proper care and handling of animals, including feeding, controlling, restraining, injuries and general health.
  • Knowledge of veterinary technology as related to the care and treatment of animals.
  • Knowledge of common diseases, their symptoms and means of transmission, administration of oral medications, assessment of change in animal status.
  • Knowledge of inoculation and euthanasia techniques.
  • Incumbents in this class must have extensive knowledge of shelter cleaning processes and procedures in order to prevent the spread of infections and diseases.
  • Knowledge of safe animal handling techniques.
  • Skills with handling animals.
  • Ability to handle animals humanely, safely, and properly control animals entering the shelter.
  • Ability to learn procedures related to sanitizing kennels, equipment, disposition of animals, and general animal handling.
  • Ability to read and comprehend the laws, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to animal licensing and vaccinating requirements.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate statistical records.
  • Ability to write clear and accurate reports.
  • Ability and willingness to perform euthanasia procedures.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to provide effective customer service.
  • Ability to move heavy, immobilized or resistant animals.
  • Ability to lift, carry and move up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of ethical standards

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency
  • Expected to know policies, procedures and any applicable codes and ordinances governing animal care and control, animal identification, recognition of illness, habits and behavior of various animals and the techniques and equipment used in capturing, restraining, receiving, feeding, caring for, grooming, and releasing animals.
  • Incumbents must be able to wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties.
  • Must be able to work on-call, extended hours and rotating shifts, overtime, evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • May be subjected to animal bites and/or scratches. Incumbents must wear a uniform and/or safety equipment.
  • Loud noise, noxious odors, and unsanitary conditions.
  • Employees and must report to work under all weather conditions.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThe Animal Care Attendant II is distinguished from the Animal Care Attendant I class in that employees assigned to the Animal Care Attendant II class serve in a full performance in nature. Employees in this class assist with euthanasia by injection, receive occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of operating procedures and policies within the work unit. The work of an Animal Care Attendant II is distinguished from the Animal Care Supervisor in that the Animal Care Supervisor serves in a first line supervisory capacity responsible for evaluating staff, assigning duties and assuring the effectiveness of the animal shelters function.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE

  • A valid Maryland State driver's license is required upon appointment in order to perform job related duties and responsibilities.
  • Certification for Euthanasia by injection.
