Position SummaryThe Health Services Coordinator is responsible for the development, implementation and coordination of the health components of the Head Start/Early Head Start Program. Acts as a resource and support to parents as it pertains to the well-being of the children and families enrolled in our program.
Position Responsibilites
  • Works with Center staff to ensure that the health and dental components are fully integrated into the classroom curriculum. Collaborates with the Nutrition Services Coordinator regarding nutrition components.
  • Assesses children for nutritional status, follows-up with parents and staff when deficiencies or problems exist. Measures heights and weights as needed.
  • Provides vision and hearing screening for all children within 45 days after their third birthday or within 45 days of enrollment if over age 3. Schedules and attends home visits with home visitors to screen EHS Homebased children. Arranges for any needed follow up with health care providers.
  • Provides education and training in the areas of health, nutrition, oral health and prenatal care to program participants and Head Start/Early Head Start staff.
  • Acts as a resource to staff and families with regard to health and nutrition issues.
  • Assists home visitors with the provision of an educational program for prenatal women, with the goal of a healthy pregnancy outcome.
  • Makes or arranges for nursing staff to make initial home visit to all families with newborn infants. Provides support and follow up as needed.
  • Available to cover home visits in the EHS Homebased program as schedule allows.
  • Oversees the provision of medical and dental services for all children, including screenings, immunizations, physicals, and follow-up care according to Head Start Program Performance Standards.
  • Ensures that all parents receive information regarding available health/dental and nutrition programs. Actively supports parent participation on Health Services Advisory Committee.
  • Facilitates health and/or nutrition presentations at HS/EHS Parent Meetings as needed.
  • Responsible for developing, implementing, and keeping required records in accordance with the health plan, and oversees the maintenance of health records kept by the home visitors and family service workers.
  • Responsible for attending monthly meetings with Home Visitors and Family Service Workers around both current and upcoming healthcare needs of children.
  • Communicates with community health, dental and education providers to maximize the ability of families to utilize community resources, and to advocate for needed health and dental services for income eligible pregnant women and families with young children.
  • Maintains up to date knowledge in child development; the principles of child health, safety, and nutrition; adult learning principles; and family dynamics.
  • Reports suspected cases of child abuse or neglect to the supervisor and to DCYF Central Intake at 1-800-894-5533.
  • Actively participates in staff meetings and the overall functions of both the Early Head Start and Head Start teams.
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to the dignity and privacy of each family, keeping all family information confidential.
  • Maintains a positive and productive attitude regarding the Head Start program and the Agency when interacting both within Head Start and with the greater community.
  • Demonstrates through positive words and actions respect for and acceptance of income eligible families.

  • Communicate proactively with the supervisor regarding workflow, problems, suggestions, etc.
  • Contribute to a positive, team-oriented work environment; and attend team and staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Be punctual for scheduled work, use time appropriately, and complete work in a timely fashion with minimal errors.

RequirementsExperience:
  • Three years of prior related health education experience, particularly with children and pregnant women, required.
  • Ability to organize and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with young children, families, and community service providers.
  • Ability to effectively screen children’s vision and hearing, measure height and weight, and arrange for any needed follow-up with health care providers.
  • Computer literacy skills.
Education
  • RN, LPN OR degree in health education, nutrition, or other health related field required.
License/Certification
  • Successful completion of criminal record check.
  • Current physical exam must be kept on file.
  • Valid driver’s license with access to reliable transportation for required travel.
