La Porte County Habitat for Humanity Inc. is Hiring a Construction Supervisor Near La Porte, IN

Position Title: On-Site Construction Supervisor

Purpose: LaPorte County Habitat for Humanity has a passion and heart for improving our community. We partner with homebuyers to build affordable housing, in partnership with volunteers and contractors providing secure places for those in need of a decent home. We are based in Michigan City, Indiana.

You will coordinate on-site building activities for the La Porte County Habitat Affiliate in accordance with our mission and standards of excellence and where necessary in accordance with the requirements of government and other grants.

Employee status: 30 hours per week

Reports to: Senor Construction Lead

Site Supervision

  • Supervise daily on-site activities, preparation and implementation, working with contractors, volunteers, groups and homebuyers.

Planning & Monitoring

  • Communicates progress and changes to build schedule, weekly.
  • Keep staff and committees apprised of construction schedule, issues, opportunities and successes.

Budget & Record Keeping

  • Understand construction budgets, reviews and be mindful of costs
  • Submit invoices and be consistent with record keeping.
  • Is mindful of LCHFH’s mission and seek to deliver cost savings without sacrificing quality, safety, suitability or other aspects of the finished home.

Materials Procurement

  • Coordinates material takeoffs from plans.
  • Organizes timely ordering and delivery of materials and supplies.
  • Manages lean inventory of unused materials.
  • Help solicit and document in-kind donations and use of Habitat Donated Products for materials, tools and services.
  • Coordinate with homeowner services, construction committee, and homeowners, on homeowner design decisions as set in policy (e.g. siding and flooring colors, kitchen cabinets, etc.).

Subcontractors, Permits, Inspections, quality standards

  • Communicate and monitor subcontractor and inspector activities
  • Understand that houses are built to code and pass inspections.

Site & VolunteerSupervision

A key objective of the LCHFH model is to maximize the use of skilled and unskilled volunteer labor. Success in this role requires the Supervisor to embrace and take ownership for the coordination and utilization of volunteers.

  • Supervise on-site work activity with and alongside the construction crew.
  • Organize work plan for volunteer crews.
  • Coordinate volunteer needs with on-staff Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Ensures liability waivers are completed by all volunteers, and records are maintained.
  • Assist with training and development opportunities for staff and long-term volunteers.
  • Ensures that proper materials, tools, PPE, etc. are available on-site appropriate to each day’s work.

Homeowner Relations

  • Serve as the on-site contact for the homebuyer in construction related matters.
  • Review house plans with the homeowner.
  • Approve homebuyer construction related sweat-equity hours.
  • Oversee completion of “punch-list” items at the completion of the home.
  • Supervise training session with homebuyer for implementation of long-term maintenance.
  • Supervises homeowner warranty complaints and repairs.

Safety

  • Conducts or delegates a daily site safety talk.
  • Implements safety procedures according to the site safety manual and policies.
  • Provides training of staff and volunteers on appropriate safety measures.
  • Reviews the Affiliate Safety plan annually and ensures that all policies and procedures are implemented to maintain a safe volunteer environment.
  • Completes and maintains HFHI Competent Person safety training, and ensures a Competent Person is on site each work day.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Sufficient knowledge of residential construction to ensure construction is in accordance with LCHFH mission, policies and all applicable regulations.
  • Understand standard residential construction blueprints and specifications.
  • Basic mathematical aptitude to calculate building measurements, quantities, etc.
  • Ability to apply construction knowledge and participate in general construction work activities.
  • Must have good people skills and patience, to teach and facilitator when necessary.
  • Ability to supervise and communicate to individuals and teams of volunteers.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills, deal well with a variety of people, personalities, age and backgrounds.

Some experience with MS Office product suite. Ability to quickly learn new tools that may be used by LCHFH.

  • Position requires the ability to regularly lift up to 50 pounds and experience frequent bending, squatting, lifting and repetitive motion on unleveled ground, gravel etc.
  • Own vehicle for use during your work day valid driver’s license with good driving record proof of insurance (mileage reimbursable in accordance with the agreement between LCHFH and the Construction Supervisor).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including Saturdays as required.
  • Participate in Habitat for Humanity Affiliate training sessions and meetings.
  • Understand and support the vision of La Porte County Habitat for Humanity.

In compliance with Habitat for Humanity policy, candidate must pass a background check.

About La Porte County Habitat for Humanity and our 2023-2025 development project

We believe that everyone has a right to a simple, decent place to live. Sustained by local volunteers, businesses, faith organizations and the work of our homeowner, we partner to build homes for families and individuals in need of affordable housing. For 33 years we have built and self-financed 55 affordable homes in LaPorte County, housing over 150 people.

Established in 1986 we are an independent, locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International Inc., and a partner in their worldwide network. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3)

In 2017, the City of La Porte acquired the abandoned Tibma Bakery building on La Porte’s east side and cleared the land for affordable housing. In February 2022, the City of La Porte created a partnership with La Porte County Habitat for Humanity as the chosen developer on this property.

The development will consist of: 5 single-family detached homes with alley access to driveway, crawlspace, storage shed, 2-4 bedrooms each, depending on household size. Sidewalks and landscaping. Home and site design remain consistent with neighborhood.
