DePaul College Prep Learning Specialist Job Description

Reports to: Director of Student Services

SUMMARY

DePaul College Prep, a Vincentian Catholic coed high school serving 1400 students in the City of Chicago, seeks a dynamic individual for the role of Learning Specialist. DePaul Prep, in partnership with DePaul University, provides a rigorous college-prep education to its diverse student body, which includes students with learning differences. Guided by our core values of Faith, Respect, Excellence, Service and Health, DePaul Prep educates young adults of Chicago to think and work independently, pursue intellectual excellence, practice compassion, and value all individuals as children of God. 

The purpose of the Learning Specialist position is to engage in the following with our diverse learners at DePaul College Prep:

  • Provide direct and targeted support to students in a collaborative team teaching or structured study hall environment. DePaul Prep's diverse learners have demonstrated and documented learning needs that require support to successfully access and demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of essential concepts in grade-level courses, leading to a college-ready graduate.
  • Partner with teachers to ensure that students are receiving appropriate accommodations in their learning environments, ensuring equity and growth in cognitive capacity and academic achievement.

Required Educational Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in Learning Disabilities, Special Education, or a similar field

Preferred Educational Qualifications:

  • Active Illinois Teacher License in Special Education and/or Learning Disabilities 
    • LBS1 Endorsement
    • Reading Specialist or Math Endorsement
  • Training, experience, and/or certification in the areas of instruction or social-emotional learning that impact success for high school students. 

Required Experience:

  • Previous experience working as a teacher or support staff in a school setting
  • Record of success working collaboratively with teachers, counselors, parents, and students
  • Knowledge and understanding of neuro-psychological testing tools and skilled in the interpretation of test results
  • Demonstrated use of student achievement data to inform practice 
  • Demonstrated understanding of the MTSS process
  • Demonstrated understanding of a range of interventions to support student growth
  • Experience in creating and reading IEPs and 504s
