Hiram Police Department is Hiring a Reserve Police Officer (Court) Near Hiram, GA

FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Summary:

This position is a certified, law enforcement position responsible for court security, prisoner transport, and all traditional law enforcement duties, as required. This position will require a variable work schedule, on call status, some weekend and holiday work, wearing a regulation uniform, and driving a city vehicle. Duties require the incumbent to perform the job both in and outdoors, sometimes during inclement weather, and the position requires the incumbent to be able to lift at least 30 pounds to waist level.

Position Minimum Qualifications:

o At least 21 years of age at time of hiring;

o High School diploma or GED required;

o Currently possess a valid Georgia POST certification;

o Be in good standing with Georgia POST including no pending disciplinary actions;

o Valid Georgia Driver’s License with a satisfactory driver’s history;

o No major traffic violations or DUI within the last seven years;

o No criminal history;

o No history of repeated illegal drug use.

Major Duties:

This is a certified, law enforcement position. The incumbent will be required to do the following:

o Shall enforce the Municipal Court’s entry, identification and screening system;

o Conduct pre and post security inspections of the Municipal Court facility;

o Patrol court facilities or man stationary security posts inside and outside the Court facility;

o Shall provide focused surveillance on incoming traffic to entrances from inside or outside the facility in order to detect oncoming threats before reaching the screening area;

o May provide armed escort services for judges, court personnel, jurors, and other designated individuals;

o When applicable, shall direct traffic, control lights on court facility properties, and monitor vehicles and pedestrians as required by supervisory personnel;

o Will be assigned to provide courtroom security during hearings;

o Shall provide security presence in the courtroom, state and local laws and judicial orders within the courthouse;

o Keep supervisors and managers informed of unusual occurrences and important events;

o Monitor alarms, radio traffic and other information sources;

o Summon assistance or inform others as needed and authorized;

o Report and appropriately address fire alarms, burglary alarms, requests for assistance and criminal acts;

o Stop, screen, and inspect pedestrians entering and / or exiting the facility as directed by Court rules or department policy;

o Prevent passage of prohibited articles into or out of Court facilities;

o Escort individuals in accordance with orders, rules, regulations, guidelines and protocols.

o Monitor all equipment; guard against loss or damage; report any such loss or damage immediately to a supervisor or manager.

o Conduct safe prisoner transport to and from locations in and around Paulding County;

o Perform law enforcement duties required of a police officer at special events or when assigned to assist shifts;

o Maintain all necessary licensing, certifications, training and records for legal employment as a peace officer for the State of Georgia;

o Generate incident reports and other documentation as required;

o Contact, assist, and cooperate with local, state or federal law enforcement; locate, retain and protect necessary evidence; testify as necessary in judicial and administrative proceedings.

o Any other duties assigned by the Chief of Police, Deputy Chief of Police or his/her supervisor.

Knowledge Required by the Position:

o Ability to use a personal computer, MS Office Suite software (Word, Excel, Outlook, and others);

o Outstanding written and verbal communication skills;

o Outstanding interpersonal skills;

o Understanding of court security procedures; criminal and civil law that effects law enforcement; and, Georgia law and POST rules regarding law enforcement officers;

o Ability to read, understand and comply with State Certification rules and Hiram Police Department policy;

o Ability to pass and maintain Georgia Crime Information certifications;

o Ability to learn laws and court decisions, accident investigation, protection and documentation of evidence, general law enforcement and crime prevention;

o Ability to learn the policies and procedures of the City of Hiram and the Hiram Police Department; geographic layout of City;

o Skill in learning, interpreting, applying and explaining complex laws and regulations; reading and interpreting documents such as maps, diagrams and textbooks;

o Skill in performing accurate mathematical calculations; comprehending and retaining factual information and applying what is learned;

o Skill in observing and remembering details of events, names, faces, numbers and physical descriptions; preparing and maintaining clear, accurate and concise reports and files;

o Skill in communicating effectively in both verbal and written form; exercising tact, self-restraint, judgment and strategy in dealing with people of all races, ethnicities and socio-economic groups and who may have emotional or physical difficulties;

o Skill in exercising sound independent judgment in emergency or stressful situations; correctly interpreting a given situation and taking appropriate action under a variety of conditions;

o Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies;

o Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions;

o Ability to gather, assemble, analyze and evaluate facts and evidence and to draw sound conclusions; working ability to obtain valid information by interview and interrogation;

o Ability to assigned shifts and special details, which may require varying hours and be on call.

Because this is a certified Law enforcement position with access to sensitive GCIC information, the position will require the following hiring process:

The successful applicant must submit to the following hiring process:

· Complete application;

· Provide all copies of required documents including, but not limited to, birth certificate; High School Diploma or equivalency; Georgia POST certification documentation; and all other documents as required;

· Pass an Interview Board; and,

· Submit to and successfully submit to and complete the following: background investigation, Polygraph test, drug screen, and psychological and medical examination.

Supervisory Controls: The Supervisor assigns work in terms of departmental goals and objectives. The work is reviewed through reports and observation of activities.

Guidelines: Guidelines include federal, state and City ordinances and regulations and departmental policies and procedures governing law enforcement action, including court procedures. These guidelines require sound judgment and interpretation in application.

Complexity: The work involves performing various duties in enhancing public safety in the City of Hiram. The incumbent is required to perform varied duties including physical observation, simultaneous operation of vehicle and computer, processing reports and interpersonal communication – often in adverse situations. Diversity of population served, rapid growth in population and variable work schedule add to the complexity.

Scope and Effect:

The purpose of this position is to protect the public, help ensure a safe environment, and provide positive community outreach/contact within the City of Hiram as well as surrounding communities.

Contacts are typically with other law enforcement officers, emergency personnel, citizens, victims, witnesses, defendants, judges, attorneys and other city employees.

Purpose of Contacts: Contacts are typically to give and exchange information, investigate non-injury private property accidents, take information and generate incident reports, and provide services and protection.
