Secondary Teacher

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under the direction of the Principal and/or Dean, the Secondary Teacher guides students in grades 7-12th in an environment that nurtures the children's academic, social, physical, emotional and spiritual needs; in an environment that challenges each child to reach his/her fullest potential, in accordance with the Montessori philosophy and California State Education curriculum benchmarks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The list of duties and responsibilities are not listed by importance or priority. Other duties may be assigned:

• Develop lesson plans and manage the learning experiences for students to ensure the needs of the groups and individual students are met.
• Assist students toward self-directed learning and normalization.
• Plan, track, evaluate and report the individual progress of the students in the classroom.
• Create and implement lesson plans and schedule parent conferences.
• Organizes a daily lesson plan, with clear learning objectives. Lesson plans are to be turned to the Dean or/and Principal.
• Maintain a neat, well-organized, and attractive prepared environment consistent with Montessori pedagogy.
• Participate in professional activities designated by the Principal, which may include workshops, curriculum development, retreats, meetings, grade reporting, planning, and other professional pursuits.
• Attend all pre-announced staff meetings and professional sessions, including staff, department, committee, and evening parent meetings.
• Work to develop close and effective relationships with families, including opportunities to discuss and understand the child’s progress
• Provide individualized tracking (recordkeeping) of student progress through school-designated platforms
• Share in the rotation of arrival and dismissal responsibilities with other site staff.
• Organize and lead field trips for students, including participation in overnight field trips for Secondary program.
• Implement thorough knowledge of Montessori’s pedagogy and the school’s mission and vision.
• Serve as a model of behavior and philosophy to students, families, and the support staff.
• Work effectively as a member of a team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities continued

• Participate in the admissions process, speaking from time to time with prospective families--at the request of the Principal.
• Follow the school’s policies and procedures for student evaluation and record keeping, meeting all due dates as required; including the administration of standardized tests.
• Assess the needs of the class and prepare requests for materials, furnishings, and supplies within the framework of the budgeting process; update inventory list and submit to Principal
• Participate in the continuous development of materials for the school.
• Update inventory and submit to the principal.

Education and/or Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree
• Valid California State teaching certificate (single subject)
• Montessori trained and certified or Montessori Certificate from MACTE accredited institution (AMI or AMS certification preferred) but not required

For candidates with no Montessori certification

• Willingness upon completion of 1 successful year of employment to register and attend a MACTE accredited Montessori Credential program.

Qualifications:

• Experience teaching in a Montessori environment and working with parents, teachers and administration.
• Knowledge and skill in instructional principles, methods and techniques of Montessori program.
• Skill in obtaining, clarifying and exchanging information.
• Skill in classroom management.
• Skill in handling student discipline.
• Ability to organize and coordinate activities.
• Ability to serve as a role model and treat students as individuals in a professional manner.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people in a multicultural, diverse socio-economic setting.
• Ability to make supplemental Montessori materials for the classroom.
• Ability to fully participate as a team member in a professional learning community.
• Ability to embrace and incorporate Montessori philosophy.
• Record of continuous professional development.
• Attuned to variations in learning style of individual students and willing to adapt to them.
• Demonstrated enjoyment and understanding of children.
• Demonstrated ability to write proficiently, speak in public and work with adults.
• Computer proficiency including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, E-Mail and internet research.

Other Qualifications:

• The ability to establish and maintain, foster, positive, and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties.
• The teacher must maintain the health and energy level needed to work with students.
• The teacher must maintain a positive, open, and professional attitude toward other staff members, parents, and students.
• The teacher will be responsible for keeping abreast of current Montessori education trends by attending workshops and reading available material.
• The ability to handle challenging situations with evidence of maturity and good judgment. Must have thorough knowledge of Montessori’s philosophy, the school’s mission and objectives and be able to implement. Must be able to serve as a model of behavior and philosophy to students, parents, and the support staff.
