General Summary:
Under limited supervision, the Cardiac Ultrasound technician is responsible for performing complete and optimally diagnostic ultrasound exams, including 2D/M Mode, Doppler color flow, and trans-esophageal echocardiography. The technician must have knowledge of anatomy and physiology and have the ability to recognize subtle differences between healthy and pathological area. The technician must be able to record the exam, perform measurements, and be able to recognize abnormal conditions which need to be reported to the physician urgently. The Cardiac Ultrasound Technician is a member of the Cardiac Care team and has accountability to function as a team in order to assist the patient in accomplishing goals set by the Clinical pathway. The technician provides care according to established standards. Patients served include adults and adult geriatrics.

Reporting Relationships
Reports to the Cardiology Department Manager and requires a limited level of supervision. Functions under the Administrative Director of Radiology and the Medical Director of the Department of Cardiology.
High School diploma or equivalent is required. Successful completion of ultrasound course, to include clinical experience required.
On the job clinical experience with an experienced sonographer may be substituted for above experience requirement. Registered in ARDMS or CCI required. Previous cardiac ultrasound experience preferred. Current BLS certification or obtained prior to providing direct patient care is required.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in generally well lit, comfortable environment. Prolonged observation of video display and computer terminals. Potential for regular exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials, requiring observation of Standard Precautions and safe handling practices. Expected to work day shift, including weekends and holidays. Expected to assist in emergency procedures during off hours as directed in department policy. Work is high demand and subject to frequent interruptions and occasional stressful situations. Will be required to prioritize schedule in order to perform 5 > 10 procedures per day.
Physical Requirements
Standing, walking, reaching stretching. Requires pushing, pulling and maneuvering echo equipment, wheelchairs, and stretchers with and without ancillary equipment weighing in excess of 100 lbs. Visual acuity required for observing video and computer monitors and reading patient charts. Manual dexterity, ability to grasp and manipulate ultrasound transducers are required.
