NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB:

A registered nurse (RN) licensed by the Wyoming State Board of Nursing who provides services necessary in meeting the health needs of district students and staff. To act under the general direction of the building principal. To perform those duties required of school nurses in meeting specific requirements of state statutes and local school district policy relating to comprehensive health care of district students. Other duties as assigned.

The school nurse facilitates positive student responses to normal development; promotes health and safety; intervenes with actual and potential health problems; provides case management; and actively collaborates with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy and learning. (NASN, 2011).

JOB FUNCTIONS:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Strictly adhere to: Wyoming Nurse Practice Act (WY State Board of Nursing)

Strictly adhere to: Scope and Standards of Practice: School Nursing (ANA and NASN 2011)

Collaborates with building principal, school counselor, teachers, parents, food service staff, and other staff and provides leadership to ensure a healthy school environment.

Assists in meeting the health needs of the general school population and those students with identified health conditions.

Provides direct care and supervision of students and staff utilizing professional assessment skills, the nursing process and established school health protocols.

Makes independent and timely nursing decisions including triage as needed.

Initiates and maintains accurate student health records, including immunization records, medication administration records, individual treatment records, individualized student health care plans (IHPs) and health screening results.

Utilizes effective procedures and standards of practice for mandatory screening programs and associated referral processes.

Communicates with parents regarding individual student health needs and serves as a liaison between school personnel, student’s family members, health care professionals and other community resources to ensure appropriate services and referrals.

Serves as a medical resource for district communications generated for parents and community regarding current health issues.

Provides nursing care to other schools as needed with consideration of current building assignment responsibilities.

Assists in planning, implementing, coordinating and evaluating nursing services to:

Maximize the quality of in-class time by reducing the incidence of health related absences,

Minimize health problems which impair learning,

Promote the highest degree of independent functioning possible.

Collaborates with district personnel, including school psychologists/special education diagnosticians and case managers in the implementation of health related Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals and services and section 504 plans.

Actively collaborates with staff, students and families to promote self-management and optimal care during school hours.

Provides school personnel with education on health topics as needed.

Assists with the development of district regulations and procedures for Nursing Services including the provision of care and the promotion of health and wellness for students and staff.

Provides education and training for unlicensed personnel designated by the building principal to assist students with health needs.

Provides school and district personnel with CPR/First Aid training, emergency care instruction and other health interventions necessary for the care of students with special health care needs.

Manages building Nursing Services budget.

Serve as a medical resource in the provision of health and wellness information to students or staff regarding chronic illness or health promotions/disease prevention topics.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

Functions independently under state and district policies and regulations without on-site medical supervision.

Serves as a liaison between Public Health officials District administration, including building principals, in the management of contagious illnesses and disease outbreaks in schools.

Follows all school district policies and procedures.

Promotes and supports district Wellness programs and policy including building level efforts and programs and district regulations.

Serves as a medical professional resource in development and revision of school district health curriculum.

Serves as medical professional resource to classroom teachers in the instruction of health-related education.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Appropriately documents nursing services and activities according to professional school nurse standards.

Provides professional health leadership to administrators and other school staff

Participates in development, evaluation and revision of district crisis response plan as requested.

Collects data to direct evidence based practice for nursing services.

Participates as a nursing professional at school functions including but not limited to: Mallo Camp and Flu Shot Clinics.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND MENTAL ABILITY:

Possess the ability to work with various personality types.

Possess sound emotional judgment.

Possess visual acuity, aided or non-aided, to read and interpret accurately written reports of a technical nature.

Possess the ability to enunciate clearly and communicate positively throughout the work day.

Possess the ability to follow and successfully complete both written and oral directions.

Possess the ability to calculate accurately. Possess basic computer skills to operate word processing software, nursing software, email programs.

EDUCATION, LICENSE, CERTIFICATION OR FORMAL TRAINING:

Current license to practice as a registered professional nurse in the State of Wyoming.

Four year degree, either a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Nursing from an accredited college or university.

Current CPR/First Aid certification.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Possess visual acuity and stamina to work at a computer monitor for at least part of the day.

Possess sufficient strength to lift boxes or equipment that may weigh as much as 50 pounds and be able to move them as far as 50 feet.

Possess sufficient strength and stamina to remain seated for periods as long as 2 hours without fatigue or discomfort.

Possess sufficient strength and stamina to remain standing for periods as long as 2 hours without fatigue or discomfort.

Possess sufficient strength and stamina to remain in a "squatting" position for some period of time during the school day without fatigue or discomfort.

Minimum Salary: $51,000

Maximum Salary: $82,500
