The Energy and Environment Cabinet, Department for Environmental Protection, Division of Environmental Program Support, Inorganic Branch, Metals Section is a Chemistry Laboratory setting that will provide you with the opportunity to practice your skills and be part of the monitoring and testing team for most all of the waters of Kentucky. The recreational lakes, rivers, streams, and creeks all over the commonwealth at some point get tested by the DEPS laboratory for nutrients, metals, volatile compounds, pesticides, herbicides and harmful algae blooms.
If you are interested in being a part of the first responder team for environmental emergency spills, created both by accident and due to citizen negligence; running samples that can help identify both known and unknown contaminants, to enforce environmental laws, protecting both human and wildlife habitats and bring responsible parties to justice, then this is the job for you.
This Chemist II position is an will focus mainly on the extraction and analysis of inorganic compounds in water. You will be working in a state of the art laboratory in the Centralized Laboratory Facility located at 100 Sower Boulevard. in Frankfort, KY.
Working for the DEPS Laboratory will provide you with a great benefit package with Health and Life insurance, Retirement as well as flexible scheduling and experience that will provide the pathway to the Chemist series or other Environmental Scientist opportunities Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Serves as primary analyst in the Inorganic Branch, Metals Section of Kentucky’s Division of Environmental Program Support (DEPSL laboratory in support of multiple United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) programs.
  • Serves as lead ICP analyst.
  • Maintains laboratory certifications required for NELAP and EPA accreditation.
  • Routine instrument maintenance and communication of service needs.
  • Provides analytical expertise and assistance in the validation of program-related data within the branch and communicates areas for improvement with branch manager and director.
  • Develops guidelines and standard operating procedures to document branch activities and compliance with all quality assurance requirements for collection, preparation and analysis methods.
  • Recommends purchases of supplies needed for analysis and prep.
  • Prepares reports and assists in the conducting of scientific studies.
  • Provides back up for other DEPS methods in their sections.
  • Does training on data review process.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in chemistry.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Two years of professional chemistry experience.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: A master's degree in chemistry will substitute for the required experience.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: NONE
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 18 years of age.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a laboratory setting. Incumbent may be exposed to hazardous materials, substances or compounds when performing chemical analysis.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
