Nurse/School Nurse

POSITION TITLE: Nurse/School Nurse 
DEPARTMENT: Special Education 
REPORTS TO: Director, Special Education 
SALARY PLACEMENT: Licensed Schedule 
REPORTS TO: Program Supervisor, Special Education
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 1 year
CLASSIFICATION: Exempt
START DATE:  8/23/2023

  • Oregon schools have been directed by the Governor under OAR 333-019-1030 to ensure that school teachers, staff and volunteers are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. "Fully vaccinated" is defined as 14 days after receiving all required doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine (currently two shots of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, or one shot of Johnson & Johnson vaccine). Under this rule employees must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Exemptions may be made only for eligible medical or religious reasons. 

POSITION PURPOSE:
This position provides comprehensive health services to students in assigned rural districts, in accordance with district policy and regulations governing nursing practice.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The primary duties and responsibilities for the position include:

  1. Establish and maintain nursing and school health records for students in accordance with state statute, rule or practice.

  2. Plan and implement health screenings.

  3. Assess student health needs, including the preparation of student health protocols.

  4. Delegate/assign, train, and monitor school staff or volunteers in identified nursing tasks to meet the health needs of students.

  5. Support the development, maintenance, and implementation of district Comprehensive Communicable Disease Management Plans to respond to outbreaks of communicable disease.

  6. Serve as a member of IEP or Child Study Team, as requested to assist in meeting the health needs of special education or Section 504 eligible students; develop Health Management Plans as needed.

  7. Act as a liaison between school and medical providers as needed in order to make recommendations regarding the nature, scope and intensity of services to be provided in the school setting.

  8. Act as a liaison between assigned school district(s), and local/state health and safety organizations and maintain knowledge of community resources.

  9. Perform program responsibilities in accordance with statutes, administrative rules, policies, and collective bargaining agreements.

  10. Attend staff meetings as requested.

  11. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILL/TRAINING:

  1. Valid Oregon license to practice as a Registered Nurse; TSPC School Nurse License preferred.

  2. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or health related field preferred.

  3. Ability to successfully complete training for Medication Administration Training for Emergency Glucagon Providers (ORS 339.867-870) and Treatment of Severe Allergic Reaction (ORS 433.800-830) required.

  4. Two years nursing experience required, with experience in clinical nursing setting preferred.

  5. Ability to work effectively with diverse students, staff and community populations. Demonstrated successful experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, including students with special needs.

  6. Ability to work harmoniously with others and to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) in a wide variety of settings.

  7. Ability to speak, read and write in Spanish preferred.

  8. Ability to meet the physical and mental requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

  9. Valid Oregon driver’s license required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The position requires minimal physical exertion. The specialist is normally standing, walking or sitting as required. Periodically the incumbent may be required to do some light lifting of materials/supplies when transitioning from site to site.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Generally, the school nurse works in an indoor work environment performing clean, non- hazardous work. The nurse may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens or communicable disease when administering first aid or attending to student health needs. The nurse is expected to follow procedures for safe disposal of sharps and other contaminated materials. Travel to assigned school districts is required on a regular basis.

  3. Utilize appropriate equipment and software as established for agency use as well as other equipment and software appropriate to the assignment.

  4. Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

  5. Confer regularly with immediate supervisor.

  6. Follow all District work procedures and reasonable requests by proper authority.

  7. Perform program responsibilities in accordance with statutes, administrative rules, policies, and collective bargaining agreements.
