City of Clovis, NM is Hiring an EQUIPMENT OPERATOR Near Clovis, NM

Position involves some manual labor and the operation of equipment in moderate complexity involving the maintenance, repair, and construction of public thoroughfares and related improvements. Infrequent overtime during evening hours, weekends, and holiday, plus stand by on a rotating basis.

**This position has been classified as a safety sensitive position and is subject to our drug testing policy to include pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident for the following prohibited substances: marijuana, amphetamines, opioids, phencyclidine (PCP), and cocaine, as well as any drug not approved for medical use by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.**

  • Operates all light equipment such as backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, tractors with attachments and rollers.
  • Services, cleans and makes minor repairs to assigned equipment.
  • Maintains a daily inspection sheet on equipment as well as records of preventative maintenance, and service performed.
  • Operates backhoes to excavate streets, parking lots and drainage ways either for repairs or cleaning.
  • Operates front-end loader, loading material in dump trucks, clearing streets, clean up after storms and removal of trash and debris after storms.
  • Operates chip spreader, asphalt distributor and related equipment on chip sealing and related road and street construction projects.
  • Assists in the training of lower level equipment operators.
  • May operate heavy equipment on a training basis or substitute.
  • May be placed in a temporary position of Heavy Equipment Operator to fill a vacant position created by injury or leave or absence of regular operator.
  • Assists in closure of streets or thoroughfares by placement of barricades or traffic control by use of paddles as a flag person
  • Assist in actual repairs of damaged areas by cutting or sawing pavement and removal plus replacement of base material and a riding surface, if either asphalt, concrete or chip seal.
  • Assist in flood control by the cleaning of drains, storm pipes, ditches and removal of debris from streets
  • Assist in ice and snow control by operating sand/salt spreader or truck-mounted snowplows. Some hand spreading may be required in areas that cannot be gotten by trucks. Delivery of sand/salt to various other departments within the City.
  • May be called upon to put other areas of expertise to use in accomplishing the responsibilities of the department.

Minimum Qualifications

  • No specific educational requirement.
  • Two 2- years of work experience in the operation of light equipment or equivalent. Experience which demonstrates a knowledge of street construction and repair in use of asphalts, concrete and base materials

Licenses and Certificates

  • Valid New Mexico Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements, or be able to obtain within 6 months.

Knowledge of :

  • Street construction and repair in use of asphalts, concrete and base materials. 

Skills in:

  • Safe operation of light equipment such as backhoes, dump trucks, and front-end loader

Ability to:

  • Perform functions with minimal supervision; understand and follow basic safety precautions, rules and regulations; 
  • Interact diplomatically with public, establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationship with others.

Physical Requirements

  • Heavy work involving frequent standing, walking, balancing, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, squatting; pushing, pulling and lifting items weighing up to 100 pounds.

Working Conditions

  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services.
  • Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Clovis policies.
  • Essential duties are predominantly performed outdoors with exposure to all types of weather conditions.
  • Employee is exposed to airborne particles, potentially toxic and/or caustic chemicals, and extreme temperatures, travel from site to site, work around traffic and heavy construction equipment.
  • Use of safety shoes, glasses and other equipment is required
