General Statement of Duties:
This is a civilian position designed to augment the certified officers in the performance of their duties as well as taking on some of the duties that do not require a certified officer to perform. Report taking that would not have investigative value, traffic control at incidents as well as community events, escort duties, parking complaints and related work as required. 
CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY
The principal function of an employee in this class is to assist the certified officers in their duties, respond to calls for non-criminal investigations and to perform other assigned non- enforcement type duties. Duties normally consist of patrol and traffic activities in the city on an assigned shift. Officers may be delegated to assignments in specialized areas such as neighborhood services, community services, criminal investigations services, administration, or other assignment. Work is performed under the general direction of a supervising Sergeant. Considerable latitude is granted to the employee but work is subject to periodic performance audits and annual evaluations. The principal duties of this class are performed in both a general office environment and an outdoor environment that may include exposure to adverse weather conditions and to potential personal danger.
**This position has been classified as a safety sensitive position and is subject to our drug testing policy to include pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident for the following prohibited substances: marijuana, amphetamines, opioids, phencyclidine (PCP), and cocaine, as well as any drug not approved for medical use by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.** Example of Work (Illustrative only)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (may vary with specific positions, this list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary): 
• Patrols assigned areas of the City in a car or on foot; 
• Enforces non-criminal ordinances; 
• Maintains community presence and/or responds to calls for service and takes appropriate action; 
• Responds to calls related to the protection of life and property, traffic incidents, and other public safety emergencies; 
• Responds to patrol calls to assist the certified officer in a non-enforcement role which include, burglaries, health and welfare assists, thefts, traffic accidents, hazardous material spills, and other public and life safety incidents; 
• Prepares reports of activities performed, and unusual incidents observed; 
• Completes reports and other related documents in a timely manner; 
• Conducts preliminary investigations and records information at vehicle accidents, other than crashes with injuries or fatality; 
• Verbally interacts with witnesses and victims to obtain information; 
• Performs self-initiated patrol consisting of patrolling high crime areas of the City, areas of parking violations, and other relevant activities; 
• Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City and Department policies, procedures and safety practices.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES 
Knowledge of: 
• Local, state, and federal laws as applicable to community law enforcement; 
• Methods, objectives, and procedures of law enforcement practices; 
• Methods, objectives, and procedures of court proceedings; 
• Officer safety skills including defensive tactics operations; 
• Standard first-aid administration; 
• Personal computers and job-related software; 
• Police equipment, including vehicles, communications units, body armor, handcuffs, batons, and other related equipment; 
• Crime prevention and education techniques. 
• Work independently as well as in teams; 
• Understand and apply departmental, state, and local law enforcement procedures, policies, rules, and regulations;
 • Analyze situations quickly and objectively, to recognize actual and potential dangers, and to determine proper course of action; 
• Cope with stressful situations calmly, fairly, tactfully, and with respect for individual rights; 
• Establish and maintain effective relations with fellow employees and with citizens with varied racial, ethnic or economic backgrounds; 
• Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; 
• Prepare accurate and grammatically correct written reports; 
• Keep immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
• Understand and carry out oral and written directions; 
• Uphold the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics at all times;
• Respond to citizen requests in a courteous and effective manner; 
• Make sound and reasonable decisions in accordance with laws, ordinances, regulations, and established procedures; 
• Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time sensitive deadlines; 
• Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks; 
• Must participate in advanced and refresher training.ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING 
 Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.
High school diploma or GED equivalency; and • Successful completion of CPD In-House & Field Training (FTO); and 
•Some experience in law enforcement or college level course work in criminal justice or other law enforcement field preferred, but not required; or 
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
 
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Valid Motor Vehicle Driver’s License, equivalent to a Class “D” New Mexico driver’s license.
Must not have been convicted of a felony, domestic violence, or other crime involving moral turpitudeESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES
• Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions, communicate effectively, interrogate and interview people, discern noises that may require investigation, and perform telephone and radio communication; 
• Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions; 
• Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to direct traffic, write reports, utilize equipment required for the performance of duties, and operate a vehicle; 
• Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, stamina, strength, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to direct traffic, bend or stoop repeatedly, maneuver through and over rough, uneven, slippery or rocky terrain, climb over fences and walls as necessary, perform search activities for extended periods of time, and perform all duties required in a law enforcement environment
