Essential Job Functions:
Constructs, installs, repairs, replaces, maintains, and alters doors, steps, tables, partitions, wooden sports equipment, furniture, paneling, and other wooden structures.
Designs and constructs cabinets, shelves, and closets.
Designs and constructs or modifies existing structures to accommodate the disabled in compliance with applicable federal and state statutes, regulations, and guidelines.
Performs emergency repairs.
Refinishes damaged structures and furniture, including damaged sheet rock.
Dig footers, set, level and merge mobile classroom trailers.
Flooring skills to include VCT repair and installation
Works with other maintenance workers, school officials, and staff to resolve maintenance problems.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Budgetary Responsibility:
Provides and verifies invoices in a timely manner. Adheres to county spending guidelines.
Report Preparation:
Simple written report due upon completion of every work order.
Equipment Operation:
Utilizes equipment pertaining to carpentry.
Contacts:
Facility Services personnel and office staff and administrators from individual schools. Occasional contact with vendors, building inspectors, contract workers.
Work Direction/Supervision: Receive both written and verbal requests for work to be done. Occasional direction given to trades assistants and Building Operation Supervisors.Decision Making: Frequent independent decision-making and problem solving as it relates to position. Seek supervisor’s approval for extensive repairs/replacement, all expenditures outside of routine supplies and materials and before calling an outside contractor.Formal Policy-Setting Responsibilities:

Physical Demands:
Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal indoor levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly; physical agility to drive, bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to risk of cold and heat, some risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud. Ability to navigate crawl spaces in the setup of modular classroom trailers.
Considerable knowledge of practices and methods of woodworking, cabinetmaking, and construction. Knowledge of building and fire codes. Knowledge of mathematics computations related to construction and design. Ability to design and construct building interiors and exteriors, and construct/repair furniture, small structures and buildings. Demonstrated ability to work with various types of woods and structural components. Ability to maintain and service equipment. Ability to work safely and efficiently with various types of equipment, machinery, and tools to include backhoes, skidsteers and augers. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Basic computer and keyboarding skills. Ability to navigate crawl spaces in the setup of modular classroom trailers. Any equivalent combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Valid VA Driver's License. This position is designated as a driving position. In accordance with Policy 5431, driving record checks are performed annually on individuals occupying driving positions.Per Diem
